The sales tax would fund equipment, salaries, benefits and facilities for both departments.
Officials said this funding would help cover salaries for new firefighters and police officers to bring staffing levels up to meet the city’s growing population.
The vote to put the additional tax on the ballot for voters has been tabled until May 18. If voters approve the 1% increase, the sales tax rate would rise to 8.975% in Columbia.

- Freshman Mizzou linebacker JJ Bush was arrested late Monday night in Columbia after he allegedly fled from police on East Broadway, according to court documents.
Police attempted a traffic stop on a white 2024 Ford Mustang just before 10 p.m. in the area of Trimble Road and East Broadway and gave chase for over 20 seconds before the vehicle stopped at Old 63, according to a probable cause statement. Bush was in the vehicle and was arrested, according to the statement.
