- Alliance For the First Amendment, a Columbia advocacy group, says the city's new median safety ordinance violates the First Amendment. The ordinance restricts where people can stand and interact with drivers on busy roadways and took effect Wednesday, July 1.
The new ordinance led to peaceful protests in medians at the intersection of Business Loop 70 and Providence Road. Protesters say the ordinance unfairly targets people facing or experiencing homelessness.
The Columbia Police Department said first-time violators will receive a warning, but people engaged in unsafe and dangerous conduct at medians, or repeated violators, are more likely to receive citations.
