“We analyze every throw, every practice, the read, the fundamental, the technique,” Heupel said on Aug. 5 after the first preseason practice. “You’re looking at every individual play (to see if) there are areas of growth. Guys that keep making the same mistake twice, a third time – that’s when you get concerned.”
Quarterback competitions are ripe for dissection and over-analysis. Each public comment by a coach or player is picked apart. Every video clip of a pass is assigned extra importance.
That process started as soon as the Vols kicked off preseason practice, one month before No. 18 Tennessee plays Furman on Sept. 5 (3:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network+/ESPN+).

The Knox County Sheriff's Office entered a 10-year agreement for surveillance cameras without disclosing the full cost to county officials. County commissioners and the mayor were unaware of the plan to build a surveillance center until after the cameras were set up.
Sheriff Tom Spangler has agreed to pause the camera rollout until his term ends in September following concerns from other officials. The sheriff's office used a procurement tool to purchase the equipment without oversight from the mayor's office.

Forty-five years later, one of the men responsible is still on the run − or quite possibly dead.
By the time Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents arrived at the airport March 24, 1981, the passengers aboard the small Beechcraft Queen Air, a twin-engine plane, had fled, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported March 26, 1981. At the time, it marked the largest cocaine seizure from an aircraft in the country, with law enforcement saying the street price of the drugs totaled over $200 million.

Toppmeyer had a ballot in USA TODAY's coach-ranking project. He discloses where he ranked Heupel and explains his surprise that his colleagues view Heupel so differently. He also offers another SEC coach he believes is underrated in the USA TODAY list.
Adams agrees with Toppmeyer that Heupel is vastly underrated in this USA TODAY pecking order, but Adams lightly pushes back on where Toppmeyer ranked Lane Kiffin. Adams would've voted Kiffin a little bit higher than his cohost did, but Adams didn't get a vote. Adams tasks Toppmeyer with securing him a ballot for the vote in 2027.

- The University of Tennessee's nonprofit research arm is suing Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company it says violated two UT patents related to neural networks inspired by the human brain.
Neural networks, according to IBM, "are among the most influential algorithms in modern machine learning and artificial intelligence." The technology "stacks simple 'neurons' in layers and learns pattern-recognizing weights and biases from data to map inputs to outputs."
The complaint filed by the UT Research Foundation, the university's nonprofit research arm, seeks to protect the professors behind the technology and their contributions to innovations developed and put into practice "years before artificial intelligence systems became widely deployed in commercial products and services."

At SEC media days on July 20, Vols coach Josh Heupel was asked whether he thinks Tennessee's fan base has cooled off on Kiffin since he last appeared in Knoxville in 2021.
"Certainly hope our fan base hasn't cooled off," Heupel said. "Whether it's the grocery stores being fully stocked with mustard or our sports stores making sure they've got reinforcements with the golf balls — hopefully Knoxville's ready for his arrival."

- The Tennessee football running back and Karns High alum DeSean Bishop hosted more than 60 kids at his football camp on July 18 at his alma mater, with proceeds from the day going to Karns athletics.
The preferred walk-on turned All-SEC starter made his presence felt everywhere. Bishop led warmups, ran the running back station, split the group into positions, picked teams for the obstacle course and made sure every camper got a pass from him before heading home.

- Christopher Nolan's latest epic, a retelling of Homer's 'The Odyssey,' has arrived in theaters worldwide. For many moviegoers, the biggest draw isn't just the film itself, but the chance to see it in IMAX 70mm.
Only a handful of U.S. theaters are screening 'The Odyssey' in IMAX 70mm, and Tennessee is home to two.
Nolan, who shot the entire film in the format − a first for a major feature − has helped turn those screenings into destinations for dedicated fans, with some embarking on their own seven-hour odyssey to Regal Opry Mills in Nashville for the first opening-day screening at 7 a.m. July 17.
Knox News journalists launched their own voyage to meet some of those dedicated fans and asked them what exactly makes 'The Odyssey' worth it.
