- Would a Michigan national championship be illegitimate? Wolverines avoided Georgia
- Date posted
- Description
- Michigan is one victory away from winning a national championship while under separate NCAA investigations into allegations of recruiting violations and impermissible sign-stealing.
Hardly the scandals of the century, but enough to cast the Wolverines into the black-hat role. They remain unfazed.
The investigations, though, have some wondering whether a Michigan national championship would be deemed illegitimate. Nonsense.
The way we see it, if Michigan beats No. 2 Washington on Monday, then the Wolverines are the champs. No need for an asterisk.
The College Football Playoff and the AP determine college football’s national champion, not the NCAA.
On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams reject the idea of Michigan being an illegitimate champion.

This week, hosts Ryan Wilusz and Brianna Paciorka of Knox News look back to see how we fared and to discuss whether any of our missed predictions could happen in 2024.

Ask us, and we say voters got this right. As the nation's best player, Daniels was a deserving winner.
Now, we turn the page to 2024.
On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams offer eight players to watch for the 2024 Heisman. Of course, quarterbacks dominate the list, including a few from the SEC, and they serve up a few sleeper candidates, too.
Later in the episode, they preview the College Football Playoff semifinals and unpack the possibility of an Alabama-Texas rematch in the national championship.

- Several Tennessee Vols are transferring. Is the sky falling on Josh Heupel? #podcast
- Date posted
- Description
- Look up to see that the sky is not falling. It's still up there.
Several Tennessee players are beelining for the transfer portal. That might seem unnerving. Look around, though, and you'll see this is happening at programs across the country.
This exodus is not a UT problem. It's simply a reflection of the state of college football, where immediate eligibility for transfers and portal windows results in a flurry of outbound players each December.
While Tennessee is losing some quantity, it is retaining most of its quality. Even so, there are a few outbound Vols whose absence could be felt in 2024.
On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and Adam Sparks assess Tennessee's defections and preview what's needed from inbound transfers. They rank the top three Vols in the portal who will be missed most in 2024.
They also assess Josh Heupel's strategy as it pertains to juggling transfers with recruiting high school talent, and they w...

- Here are Tennessee football's biggest needs to address in transfer portal #podcast
- Date posted

- Description
- The transfer portal is open, and Tennessee needs to do a little holiday shopping. The Vols have legitimate needs to address for 2024.
Defensive backs? Wide receivers? A tight end? Some offensive linemen? A backup quarterback?
If the Vols are feeling gluttonous, they could do some big spending in the transfer market.
On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer, Adam Sparks and John Adams offer their top needs for Tennessee to address via transfers.
Overall, though, the Vols have not been as active as some SEC peers in adding transfers in past years, but they can't afford to stand by on the heels of an 8-4 season, after which they must plug several holes.
Earlier in the episode, an examination of how the Vols earned a surprise bid to the Citrus Bowl. They'll face Iowa.

- CFP didn't choose 'four best' teams. Where's Georgia? Committee flubbed that, too #podcast
- Date posted
- Description
- These aren’t the ‘four best teams.' Not by our count.
The College Football Playoff selection committee explained its decision to swap out Florida State, the undefeated ACC champion, from the playoff field in favor of Alabama, the SEC’s one-loss champion, as a mission to insert the “four best teams” into the field.
The committee also conjured up some other previously unheard of reasoning as justification for making the unprecedented move of rejecting an undefeated Power Five champion from the playoff.
On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams opine that the committee erred in its field of No. 1 Michigan, No. 2 Washington, No. 3 Texas and No. 4 Alabama.
A field of the four most-deserving teams would have included the three undefeated Power Five champions – Michigan, Washington and FSU – plus Texas, which went 12-1 and beat Alabama.
But, even using the “four best teams” meter, the hosts think the committee still ...

- Could downtown Knoxville benefit from food delivery robots? #podcast
- Date posted

- Description
- Knoxville has delayed the robot takeover for six months.
That is, the Knoxville City Council voted Oct. 31 to enact an emergency moratorium on personal delivery robots. The ordinance, which passed unanimously, will keep companies from deploying the autonomous robots on city streets and sidewalks for six months to buy time for city officials to develop a policy.
Downtown reporter Ryan Wilusz is joined by growth and development reporter Daniel Dassow, who specializes in technology and who experienced these robots firsthand on the University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus as a student.
The two discuss whether downtown could benefit from this technology, what the city should consider before allowing robots on city streets and how they could impact Knoxville's identity.

The Vols (8-4) will learn their bowl destination on Sunday. Most of the prominent projections have identified Tennessee as being earmarked for the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, against either UNC (8-4) or North Carolina State (9-3).
Tennessee last played in the Gator Bowl to culminate the 2019 season, rallying to beat Indiana to culminate Jeremy Pruitt's second year on the job.
On today's episode, Blake Toppmeyer, Adam Sparks and John Adams examine the Vols' postseason path and why UNC would be a more desirable opponent for Tennessee.

- Here's how Alabama makes College Football Playoff – it's not just beating Georgia #podcast
- Date posted
- Description
- Seven teams will play in conference championship games this weekend with a realistic shot at College Football Playoff qualification, while an eighth (Ohio State) sits at home with a longshot avenue toward backdoor entry.
If the higher-ranked teams hold serve – Georgia, Michigan, Washington and Florida State – then it’s a tidy field of four undefeated teams from Power Five conferences.
If at least one of those undefeated teams fall, though, then the committee will face some hard choices.
On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams unpack a series of hypothetical playoff scenarios in which Alabama upsets Georgia in the SEC Championship. Who's in, and who's out in each case? We explain the 2-step process for Alabama to earn playoff selection – and also how both Georgia and Alabama could qualify.

- Can we call this Tennessee football season a bust? Let's hold off on that – for now #podcast
- Date posted
- Description
- Tennessee football's crowning achievement 10 games into the season is a win at Kentucky. What's that say? Well, it's not a success story.
But, can this season fairly be labeled a bust?
The Vols (7-3, 3-3 SEC) entered the season with a preseason No. 12 ranking and the momentum of an 11-win campaign that included an Orange Bowl triumph. It didn't take long, though, for Tennessee to show its colors and prove this would be no repeat of 2022. The Swamp landed the first punch on the Vols, and Missouri ripped off any remaining veneer in a 36-7 beatdown in Columbia.
On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer, Adam Sparks and John Adams debate whether Heupel's third season at Tennessee is to be considered a bust.
The Vols will host undefeated Georgia before wrapping up at home against pitiful Vanderbilt. That strongly points to an 8-4 finish to the regular season.

- 'Really disappointed': Josh Heupel reacts to 36-7 loss to Missouri
- Date posted
- Description
- Tennessee football's dominance over Missouri ended in a lackluster 36-7 loss on Saturday, as the Vols' slim hopes of an SEC East title shot were dashed.
It was the largest losing margin of coach Josh Heupel's three seasons at UT. The previous largest was a 52-24 loss to Alabama in 2021. UT also scored the fewest points in a game of Heupel's tenure.

- Widow of Appalachian moonshiner Popcorn Sutton wants his legacy to live on
- Date posted
- Description
- In the final years of his legendary life, Popcorn Sutton put his wife up on a pedestal – and on the catwalk above the 2,500-gallon pots where his moonshine was being distilled.
It’s only fitting the woman the notorious moonshiner was sweet on learned to stir the sugar.
Even if they could make liquor (“likker,” as Popcorn spelled it), his process and quality couldn’t be replicated … until now.
With Pam’s blessing, Popcorn products are returning to the market – legally, this time – through a partnership with Joe Baker, the founder of East Tennessee’s own Ole Smoky Moonshine.
Later this month, two beverages will hit shelves bearing Popcorn Sutton’s name and image: a “master blend” bourbon whiskey and his likker, a sugar- and corn-based product.

No. 12 Tennessee's best path to the Citrus Bowl involves beating No. 15 Missouri on Saturday in Columbia.
On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer, Adam Sparks and John Adams review Nico Iamaleava's performance against UConn before examining the Vols' game against Missouri and what it means to each team's bowl prospects.

- Here's how often we expect Tennessee Vols to make a 12-team College Football Playoff #podcast
- Date posted
- Description
- Wednesday’s reveal of the first College Football Playoff rankings served as a reminder of just how interesting – and deep – the playoff race will become next season.
The Vols aren’t in the hunt for this year’s playoff, but the format will expand to 12 teams in 2024. If the 12-team playoff were here today, Tennessee would remain in contention for a spot.
And, if last week’s 33-27 win over Kentucky offered any indication, the Vols should be a contender next year.
On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer, Adam Sparks and John Adams examine the long-term outlook for Tennessee and the CFP.
The Vols never made the four-team playoff. They came closest last year. This is the 10th year of the four-team format.
If the 12-team playoff lasts for 10 years, how often should Tennessee expect to qualify?
Sparks offers a conservative outlook, while Toppmeyer and Adams get aggressive.

- Josh Heupel holds silent protest over Tennessee football game officiating #shorts
- Date posted
- Description
- Coach Josh Heupel staged another silent protest over officiating Saturday after the #Vols beat @ukfootball 33-27 at Kroger Field.
Only this time, he cut it in half — from 16 seconds to 8 seconds.
When Heupel was asked why UT defenders sacked Kentucky quarterback Devin Leary only once, he sat silently for 8 seconds during the postgame news conference. Then he said: "OK. Next question."
A week ago, he remained silent for 16 seconds after being asked about officiating following UT's 34-20 loss to Alabama. In both games, neither UT opponent was flagged for a live-ball penalty.
If Heupel criticizes the officiating, he could garner a fine from the @SEC office. So perhaps he figures it's better to say nothing at all.

- Tennessee football road woes: Are Vols more in danger vs. Kentucky or Missouri? #podcast
- Date posted
- Description
- Tennessee's road woes are looking more like reality than myth.
Alabama rarely has been more beatable during Nick Saban's tenure than it was Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Vols owned the first half. They were up by two scores at halftime, and their domination was more lopsided than that.
And then Tennessee experienced an all-systems failure in the second half and watched No. 8 Alabama run away with a 34-20 victory.
The Vols have not won in Tuscaloosa since 2003. Not coincidentally, they have not won in The Swamp since 2003, either.
In real time, here's what's most concerning about the Vols' road struggles: They'll play at Kentucky on Saturday and must play at No. 16 Missouri on Nov. 11.
On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer, Adam Sparks and John Adams examine what went wrong in the second half in Tuscaloosa and just how vulnerable Tennessee is against Kentucky. The Wildcats are no Alabama, but they beat Florida in Lexington.<...
