- On September 11, 2019, Channy Lin was honored at the On the Road Board Meeting which was located at Central High School as a Terrific Teammate.
Even though Channy Lin is not a teacher in the classroom, she is a teacher at heart. Channy brings a unique perspective to the students at Faxon Elementary and has a deep passion for all Faxon staff and students. She has also inspired a new unit that will be taught at Faxon to help students grow to become more globally-minded.

- On September 11, 2019, both Sa'Mya Hawthorne & Jasmine Johnson were honored at the On the Road Board Meeting which was located at Central High School as Scholar Superstars.
Sa'Mya has been described as a quick learner, however, she is not afraid to ask questions when she doesn't understand something. She is also very responsible and has been described by her teacher as the type of student that any teacher would love to have their classroom.
Jasmine is a star in the classroom! She is bright and attentive with a real hunger to learn. She sets a great example to her classmates of someone who cares about their education.

- Late July and early August is a very auspicious time for Kansas City Public Schools. With everyone getting ready for the upcoming school year, KCPS took it to another level this year.
Starting with the second annual Summer Professional Development Institute at Southeast High School. Over 800 teachers and administrators attended the institute, and the it was focused on equipping teachers so that they can provide the individualized, equitable and top-flight lessons to students.
The fourth annual Summerfest was an incredible success this year. In total, more than 7,200 people that attended were provided 7,000 backpacks, 5,000 sets of school supplies, uniforms for 5,000, 3500 pounds of food, sports physicals, lunch and transportation. It was the LARGEST Summerfest to date!

Kansas City DJ and musician and KCPS alumnus Sean Tyler hosted the event.
The 2019 KCPS Convocation theme was “It’s Our Time.” The event was presented as a kind of Homecoming for students, parents, staff, alumni and community members. KCPS stakeholders have overcome enormous challenges and stayed the course towards realizing the goal of creating a public education system where every student can achieve their dreams. - On Friday, August 9th, 2019, KCPS hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration to mark the opening of Lincoln College Preparatory Academy Middle School.
This event marked the completion of a two-year, $16.3 million renovation project at the old Lincoln Junior High School building and included remarks by Superintendent Mark Bedell, School Board Chair Pattie Mansur, and Principal Mary Bachkora. The project began in 2017 as part of a discussion around how to address ongoing overcrowding at nationally-ranked Lincoln College Preparatory Academy high school. Moving the middle school students to the new campus will allow for additional enrollment and an improved teaching and learning environment at the high school.

- During the 2018-2019 school year, the Department of Community Engagement hosted a variety of events including the Go Red, Go STEM program, where 100 of female KCPS students were introduced to the different professions in the STEM field. In addition, the Community Engagement team expanded on-going collaborations with community partners such as Scholastic, Inc, Church of the Resurrection and more.
KCPS ended the academic year with pomp and circumstance as we honored our seniors during six high school graduation ceremonies on May 20 and 32. In total, over 1,000 students walked across the stage, turned their tassels and became high school graduates. Seniors earned almost $10 million in scholarships and will attend 80+ different higher education institutions in the fall. KCPS is extremely proud of every member of the Class of 2019, and we are excited about the great things they will accomplish!

- On Monday, June 17, 2019, the Kansas City Chiefs rookie class, alumni and staff visited Lincoln College Preparatory Academy to kick off the “NFL Huddle for 100” campaign.
They painted railings, put some new mulch and put decals on football helmets. They also announced a partnership with the NFL Foundation, LISC, and KCPS to provide Lincoln with a $250,000 “Grassroots grant” to build a new football field at Lincoln that sits near the site of Municipal Stadium from 1963-71.

- On Tuesday morning, May 14, 2019, Kansas City Public Schools Teacher of the Year Arjun Ravindran officially delivered the Teacher of the Year traveling trophy to 2019 recipient Diane Mora at East High School. Principal Luis Hinojosa and a group of Ms. Mora's students helped her celebrate this award. Ms. Mora teaches English and literacy to refugee and immigrant students. Mr. Ravindran teaches algebra at Central Middle School. The KCPS Teacher of the Year program is made possible thanks to the sponsorship of the KCPS Education Foundation.

Our Science Curriculum Coordinators in the Curriculum Instruction and Professional Development supported and engaged our 5th and 8th-grade students from all around the district. During the Expo, students experienced and engaged in science demos, experiments, and presentations in preparation and excitement for the science MAP assessment later that month.

- We were proud to host our 2019 Middle College Program Spring Commencement Ceremony on May 7, 2019, where we had our graduates received their high school diplomas or their GED and are going to higher education at MCC-Penn Valley. In attendance were KCPS Superintendent, Dr. Mark Bedell, MCC-Penn Valley President, Dr. Tyjaun Lee and Latrina Collins from the Full Employment Council. This is our fourth class of graduates and we are always in awe the student's hard work and determination to achieve their educational goals. We couldn't be more proud of our graduates and we can't wait to see what the future holds. #AllinKCPS
