Dr. Lee gave them all scholarships to afford their books and other necessities they will need for their college career. She also introduced KCPS superintendent, Dr. Mark Bedell who gave a rousing commencement speech which included a touching story about what led to the creation of the Middle College Program. #AllinKCPS

All of these outstanding educators were celebrated and the award winners were revealed during the invitation-only event. Congratulations to the 2019 Principal of the Year, Deloris Brown of Wendell Phillips and the 2019 Teacher of the Year, Diane Mora of East High School. Thank you for all of your hard work and for continuing to show that KCPS is All In for our students.

Those students head to the gym to have some fun and dance while listening to some great music. - KCPS hosted the third Intramurals Day for employees from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 8, at Central Academy of Excellence. The day featured three-on-three basketball and six-on-six volleyball matches with teams comprised of employees from different schools and departments. There were also card games, dominoes, and table games. Intramurals Day builds staff unity and promotes spirit across the school system.

- KCPS is bringing even more support for students in the classroom. Students now can get the most important meal of the day, every day, so that they can focus on the important work of learning.
KCPS recently implemented the program at five schools: Harold Holliday Sr. Montessori School, James Elementary School, Longfellow Elementary School, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School and Troost Elementary School. Since the program’s launch, student participation in breakfast at these schools has increased from 52 percent to 96 percent.
KCPS received $477,742 in grant funding in 2018 for 25 schools serving 12,500 students to introduce Breakfast in the Classroom service. - Despite frigid temperatures on March 4, 2019, a group of KC residents was seen holding a rally in front of city hall where they are advocating for tenants' rights. They go by name of KC Tenants and they intend to make housing a central issue in the upcoming mayoral election.
The group had a long list of objectives and specific recommendations aimed at making housing cheaper, safer and more available. They also demanded a response from all 11 mayoral candidates.
Dr. Bedell spoke at this rally, and highlighted the Justice in the Schools (JTS) is a joint project between Legal Aid of Western Missouri, the Kansas City Health Department, and the Kansas City Public Schools. As a result of this project, there will be school-based legal clinics staffed by Legal Aid and volunteer attorneys to help with a variety of issues that are negatively impacting students and their families.

On Feb. 1, at Woodland Early Learning Community School, KCPS announced that students earned 82.9 percent of the points possible on its 2018 Annual Progress Report.
This event was an opportunity to launch our “Thank You, Kansas City!” tour so that we can express our gratitude to our stakeholders for helping us achieve unprecedented results and a remarkable turn-around. From losing provisional accreditation in 2011 and facing a potential state takeover in 2012.
Since then, the school system has been steadily gaining ground and has met the mark for full accreditation under the leadership of the School Board and Dr. Bedell AND with the sustained support of leaders, teachers, students, support staff, family members, partners, and volunteers.

Starting with Superintendent Bedell hosting a town hall forum where Teachers and support staff could come and ask questions and offer advice as we look to be better for our students and community. We also got our competitive juices going as we hosted our first bi-annual Intramurals day, where team members could play basketball, volleyball, and table games.
