With Christmas lights twinkling and the season of goodwill in full swing, Bellevue Hospital Chief Executive Officer Suzette Buchanan is making a heartfelt appeal to families: take your loved ones home for the holidays.
More than 400 patients who have been medically cleared for discharge are still living on the Kingston-based hospital’s compound, some waiting for decades for a family member to return.
Buchanan told The Gleaner that for a number of these individuals, Christmas has come and gone for as long as 50 years without a visit from home.
“For many of these individuals, they were dropped off by a family member, and they have not seen them since,” she said. “These are persons that are stable but do not have any social support, no family, no community or friends, so they reside at Bellevue Hospital.”

In 2013, the year Hamish Campbell took up the post of assistant commissioner at the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), Jamaica recorded 258 police fatal shootings.
Twelve years later, as Campbell gets ready to go off into retirement, the 296 police fatal shootings recorded since January this year is already the highest in Jamaica’s history for a calendar year.
After his first two years in the job, the number of police fatal shootings was slashed from 258 in 2013 to 115 the following year and 101 in 2015, before a historic low of 86 in 2019.
However, since then there has been a steady rise that could see police fatal shootings surpass 300 in a calendar year for the first time.

Davis said the overhaul, which is estimated to exceed $5 million, follows radio silence from the Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ), the state entity that spearheaded the housing development in partnership with the China-based Henan Fifth Construction Group Company.
The Category 5 hurricane tore off a large portion of the roof, , destroyed the drywall partitions, and ruined furniture.

Traffic police and emergency crews rushed to the East-West Corridor of Highway 2000 this afternoon after a major crash involving a public passenger bus left several people injured.
Preliminary reports indicate that a number of passengers were flung from the bus on impact.
An eyewitness told The Gleaner that some of the injured were seen lying motionless, but stressed that only a doctor can confirm any deaths.

With genuine compassion, he spearheaded a webpage, JamaicaNeed.com, that highlights charities and entities providing relief after Hurricane Melissa, giving people a hub to support the various efforts. The young entertainer from Chico, California, told GoodHeart that he started the initiative to help Jamaica in its time of need.
