The Ammar’s department store in downtown Kingston was gutted by a fire Sunday, February 1, 2026. The losses are believed to be in the millions.
The fire department indicated that a call reporting a blaze at the establishment was received in the morning.
A unit from the York Park Fire Station responded and reinforcements from other fire stations were called in.
Around 30 firefighters worked to battle the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A 68-year-old man’s lifelong dream of owning a home is in jeopardy amid claims that the Ministry of Housing has encroached on his property in Spanish Town, St Catherine.
Fighting back tears, Willie Rowe said his long-held ambition was derailed last year when he visited Lot 6, Naseberry Grove, to lay out the foundation for his house and discovered that a section of the land had been fenced off by another party.
“I asked my neighbour if they see who do dat. They said they don’t know who but is some ministry man – some government people,” he recalled.
As he searched for boundary pegs to confirm that his land had been trespassed on, the market vendor told The Sunday Gleaner that he purchased the property in 2022 through a mortgage arrangement with the National Housing Trust (NHT) for approximately $2.5 million.

The Sri Lankan-born Jamaican medical doctor, who studied at the University of the West Indies, Mona, and who works in private medical care after serving at Mandeville Regional and Kingston Public Hospitals, said, nothing in her training prepared her for some of what persons in transition say, and neither does it prepares how to cope when patients pass.
During her 30-years—in practice, she has developed a special interest a palliative care approach, “which looks at the patients that we care for as people, rather than people that we care for with diseases that we treat.”

Flames ripped through sections of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) depot in Rockfort, East Kingston, on Tuesday afternoon, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and triggering an emergency response from firefighters.
The blaze reportedly broke out about 3:00 p.m. in the section of the depot where out-of-service buses are parked. Firefighters rushed to the scene and worked feverishly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other areas of the facility.

He passed away today after falling ill while overseas.
Born on October 7, 1938, Bovell attended Munro College and later Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.
He practised as a solicitor in the Supreme Court (Jamaica) in 1964.
In 1979, he became a director of GraceKennedy and served in that position for 30 years.
He also served as the treasurer of the Jamaica Labour Party, from 1983-1989.
As a member of the St Margaret’s Anglican Church, he served as secretary of the Incorporated Lay Body of the Anglican Church in Jamaica in the Province of the West Indies from 1983-1989.

JANUARY 14, 2026: The board of the University Hospital of the West Indies has reported “specific matters” from a report on the procurement activities of the hospital to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Fraud Squad and the Jamaica Customs Agency. Following the tabling of a report from the Auditor General’s Department in Parliament on Tuesday, the board said the relevant authorities have been apprised of the audit.

The United States has announced it will suspend the processing of immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries, including Jamaica, whose nationals are considered likely to rely on public assistance while living in the U.S. The suspension is scheduled to take effect on January 21 and will not apply to temporary tourist or business visas.

The resilience so often used to describe the Jamaican farmer is clearly exemplified in 35-year-old Latoya Barrows-Johns, who, along with her partner, operates a 15-acre crop and livestock farm at Salt Pond, a section of the Bernard Lodge in St Catherine.
Barely a year old, the farm – with three workers – was ravaged by Hurricane Melissa in October. Acres of pumpkin, okra, sweet pepper and other crops were destroyed, while goats and pigs perished. Losses are put at over $3 million.
Burrows-Johns, who had agricultural produce slated for the lucrative Christmas market, said those plans were severely disrupted.
Despite the setback, the young female farmer, who grew up watching her parents cultivate crops for the Jamaican food market in St Mary, has refused to give up on her lifelong dream of operating a successful farm.

Mayor of Black River Richard Solomon has urged residents to remember families still living in severe discomfort following Hurricane Melissa, even as St Elizabeth marked the Christmas season with a scaled-down tree-lighting ceremony on Monday night.
