- Hurricane losses fail to break the fighting spirit of a young farmer

The resilience so often used to describe the Jamaican farmer is clearly exemplified in 35-year-old Latoya Barrows-Johns, who, along with her partner, operates a 15-acre crop and livestock farm at Salt Pond, a section of the Bernard Lodge in St Catherine.
Barely a year old, the farm – with three workers – was ravaged by Hurricane Melissa in October. Acres of pumpkin, okra, sweet pepper and other crops were destroyed, while goats and pigs perished. Losses are put at over $3 million.
Burrows-Johns, who had agricultural produce slated for the lucrative Christmas market, said those plans were severely disrupted.
Despite the setback, the young female farmer, who grew up watching her parents cultivate crops for the Jamaican food market in St Mary, has refused to give up on her lifelong dream of operating a successful farm.

The neighbouring communities of Westgreen and Catherine Hall in Montego Bay, St James, which experienced major flooding during the passage of Hurricane Melissa in October, got a much-welcomed Christmas treat over last weekend, thanks to a joint venture by the Montego Bay Freezone (MBFZ) and Global Services of Jamaica (GSAJ).
‘There are a lot of young people here at the free zone who are living in this community, and so we were reaching out to offer a helping hand,” said Gloria Henry, the vice-president of business process outsourcing (BPO) and logistics at the Port Authority of Jamaica.
“We just want to give a little spirit of Christmas to the residents.”
The two communities were considered ‘ground zero’ after the hurricane as they were partially covered in mud, which flowed freely in the community as the Barnett River breached its banks. The ground floors of most of the homes were left buried under silt, and seve...

The mayor was speaking at the Municipal Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony held on the grounds of the Jeremy Palmer/Everton Fisher Municipal Building, where the St Elizabeth Municipal Corporation erected a modest artificial tree decorated in traditional red, gold, and green, and illuminated by white fairy lights.

In 2013, the year Hamish Campbell took up the post of assistant commissioner at the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), Jamaica recorded 258 police fatal shootings.
Twelve years later, as Campbell gets ready to go off into retirement, the 296 police fatal shootings recorded since January this year is already the highest in Jamaica’s history for a calendar year.
After his first two years in the job, the number of police fatal shootings was slashed from 258 in 2013 to 115 the following year and 101 in 2015, before a historic low of 86 in 2019.
However, since then there has been a steady rise that could see police fatal shootings surpass 300 in a calendar year for the first time.
