On Good Friday, April 3, 2026, members of the Rastafarian community observed the anniversary of the Coral Gardens atrocity, a dark chapter in Jamaica’s history in which members of the community were subjected to violence and repression by the State.
In a symbolic act of restitution, Minister of National Security and Peace Dr Horace Chang and Minister of Culture Olivia Grange formally handed over land titles to members of the Rastafarian community at Albion Heights in St James.
The gesture forms part of the Government’s broader programme of reparative justice for Rastafarians affected by the Coral Gardens incident, recognising the injustices suffered and supporting efforts toward healing and restoration.

“That was the worst experience anybody should go through,” Ballentine told The Gleaner as she recounted the traumatic hours leading up to the baby’s birth.
“I was looking forward to this baby with all of my heart, all of my might. I set up my nursery before I got hospitalised. Everybody go in there, go have their baby, and come back out. Why me was the only...

The vaccine they say, has been successfully used in some countries to eradicate, and or reduce the percentage of young women presenting with the disease and some countries have recommended that everyone between the ages of nine years to 45 years be vaccinated.
In Jamaica, the recommended age is 15 years.

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is warning that Jamaica’s recovery from the destruction of Hurricane Melissa will rise or fall on a single factor: Government, private interests, citizens and international partners all pull their weight in a united, national push.
Utilities have largely returned in western parishes devastated by the monster storm last October, but more than 90,000 households remain displaced or are living in gutted structures.
William Squier Gonzalez, UNOPS portfolio development adviser for Latin America and the Caribbean, believes recovery efforts done in a vacuum will lead to a fractured and failed response, and a disjointed system.
UNOPS is the operational arm of the United Nations, dedicated to implementing projects, managing infrastructure, and handling procurement for the UN system, international financial institutions, and governments.
