The Hawk T2 aircraft had been flying out of the RAF Valley station on Anglesey on Wednesday when it plummeted to the ground in the nearby the Pencarnisiog area.
The RAF said a qualified instructor and trainee were on board and that they "experienced a problem shortly after take off, declared an emergency", and then ejected.
Station Commander at RAF Valley, Group Captain Gez Currie said it was "too early to speculate the cause of the crash", and a thorough investigation will now take place.
He added that where the aircraft had only shortly become airborne, the decision-making process of the pilots would have had "to be pretty rapid, particularly in terms of making sure the aircraft was pointed away from populated areas".

- The home secretary has ordered an urgent review after Border Force failed to intercept a second migrant boat in two days before it reached the Kent coast.
On Tuesday afternoon 21 people were detained by Border Security Command after a boat arrived on the beach of Samphire Hoe, Dover.
The Home Office has not said whether more people from the boat were being sought.
The department said Shabana Mahmood has ordered an urgent review by Border Security Command into this week’s beach landings.
It came after a dinghy made it to shore at Folkestone on Monday morning – the first undetected landing for a year.
The thousands of migrants crossing the Channel are usually brought to shore by Border Security Command or RNLI boats.
Before Monday, no small boat arrivals to the UK coast without an escort had been officially recorded since September 6 2025.
