- Description
- Downing Street has denied that it created an "atmosphere of pressure" with regard to vetting Peter Mandelson, rejecting claims by sacked Foreign Office official Sir Olly Robbins.
The former top official said on Tuesday that No 10 held a "dismissive approach" towards the vetting, and that the Foreign Office found itself under "constant chasing" from Downing Street officials.
He was speaking while giving evidence to MPs over his handling of the vetting process for Mandelson's appointment as US ambassador.
Asked whether No 10 recognised that description, Sir Keir Starmer's spokesperson responded: "No"
"I reject that characterisation," the spokesperson said, "I think there's clearly a difference between asking for updates on an appointment process and the idea of being dismissive about vetting.
"I would draw a distinction between the idea of pressure and being kept informed about the process and the progress of the appointmen...

The late Queen would have turned 100 on April 21, and the King said her existence should be celebrated as a “life well-lived” rather than marking an “absence” ahead of a series of royal events that will honour her on Tuesday.

- Sir Keir Starmer and Downing Street were determined to appoint Lord Mandelson as US Ambassador at all costs - the man sacked over the vetting scandal, told MPs today.
Sir Olly Robbins, the former head of the Foreign Office, said Downing Street put him under constant pressure to give Mandelson the green light, and had no interest in whether he'd passed security vetting or not.
The damning evidence places the Prime Minister in even greater difficulty over his judgement and competence.
In the Commons, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said Sir Keir's error in appointing Mandelson decision had put national security at risk and repeated calls for him to resign.
In other news, President Trump told ITV News that America will get a deal with Iran "one way or another", as the ceasefire between the US and Iran is due to end tomorrow.

- WATCH IN FULL: MPs hold emergency debate over Mandelson vetting scandal
- Date posted
- Description
- MPs are back in the Commons for an emergency debate around the vetting process during and after Lord Mandelson's appointment as US Ambassador.
Earlier, the former Foreign Office boss who was sacked over the scandal told a parliamentary committee that No 10 held a "dismissive approach" to vetting in Peter Mandelson's case, which created an "atmosphere of pressure".
Sir Olly Robbins was sacked by the prime minister last week for "deliberately" keeping him in the dark over Mandelson’s failure to pass security vetting checks before he was appointed.
But speaking in front of the Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday, Robbins said there had been pressure from Downing Street to clear the appointment, and an expectation that Mandelson "needed to be in post and in America as quickly as humanly possible."

From Tredegar to Neath and beyond, these towns and villages haven't just returned Labour members for generations but helped to build the movement itself.
It was in Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare that the party's first member and leader, Keir Hardie, broke through.
While in Tredegar, Aneurin Bevan rose from the son of a coal miner to become one of the most consequential Labour cabinet ministers in the party's history.
The careers of figures like Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock further cemented the south Wales valleys as the symbolic heartland of Labour politics.
For more than a century, that bond has appeared unbreakable.
But with Labour consistently falling behind in the polls in Wales ahead of May's Senedd election, there is a growing sense that something deeper may be shifting.

- Description
- Donald Trump has said the US forcibly seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship on Sunday that tried to get around a naval blockade near the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump, in a post on social media, said the ship was warned by a US Navy guided missile destroyer in the Gulf of Oman to stop, but it did not.
“Our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room,” Trump wrote.
He said US Marines had custody of the cargo ship, named Touska, and were “seeing what’s on board!”
The seizure escalates a back-and-forth with Iran over traffic in the strait and comes as the US was preparing for a second round of in-person talks with Iran, as a fragile ceasefire runs out in days.

New attacks on the Strait threatened to deepen the global energy crisis and push the countries into renewed conflict, as multiple ships attempting to transit the Strait reported attacks.

- Calls grow for Starmer to resign over Mandelson vetting scandal
- Date posted
- Description
- Sir Keir Starmer was "not aware" the Foreign Office had granted Lord Peter Mandelson vetting clearance against recommendations until a meeting on Tuesday night, according to an email from the prime minister’s principal private secretary (PPS).
Downing Street on Friday released a "readout" of the meeting, which was sent via email by Starmer's PPS Dan York-Smith on Wednesday, summarising discussions said to have involved the Cabinet Secretary Dame Antonia Romeo and permanent secretary at the Cabinet Office Catherine Little.
The memo appeared to add credence to the PM's defence that Foreign Office officials were responsible for clearing Mandelson's appointment without his knowledge.
Starmer on Friday said it was "staggering" and "unacceptable" that he was not told the former US ambassador had failed his security vetting.

- Donald Trump says it's 'too bad' Nato didn't help in reopening Strait of Hormuz
- Date posted
- Description
- US President Donald Trump said he "feels good" about the Strait of Hormuz reopening, but that the US blockade will remain in place.
He was speaking to ITV News' US Correspondent Dan Rivers on Friday, shortly after a joint statement with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, which said the crucial Strait "is fully open and ready for full passage".
But the Strait is not open as it pertains to Iran, Trump said, adding: "We have to finish the deal before we open it for Iran".
When asked where this leaves the US-UK relationship with Sir Keir Starmer, he responded: "Not good, not good at all".

- Will Iran war cause drilling in North Sea to ramp back up?
- Date posted
- Description
- With global energy markets in turmoil and Scottish voters facing spiralling bills, SNP leader John Swinney says the arguments around North Sea drilling have “changed” and he is now open to new oil and gas exploration off Scotland’s coast.
It is a remarkable turnaround for a party that spent the last five years making the opposite case.
“The arguments I think that have changed in recent weeks have been about the reliability and the security of energy supply, which brings in further considerations that have to be taken into account,” Swinney told ITV News.
He wants energy policy devolved from Westminster to Holyrood after the election, and insists any new project would still face a “climate compatibility test” before winning SNP backing. But he now concedes it may be better for the environment, as well as for energy security, to produce oil and gas in the North Sea rather than rely on imports shipped from overseas.

- Date posted
- Description
- A 10-day truce appeared to be holding in Lebanon on Friday, promising a pause in fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group.
The ceasefire could clear one major obstacle to a deal between Iran and the United States and Israel to end weeks of devastating war.
However, it remained unclear whether Israel would completely stop strikes on Hezbollah, and whether the militant group would recognise the deal. #iran #iranwar #israel #lebanon #war #ceasefire

- Starmer urged to resign over Mandelson vetting
- Date posted
- Description
- Reporter Lewis Denison explains the latest storm engulfing Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The Foreign Office’s top civil servant, Sir Olly Robbins, will be leaving his post after it emerged the department had overruled a security vetting process to clear Lord Peter Mandelson to become UK ambassador to the US.
It is understood Sir Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper have lost confidence in the Foreign Office permanent under-secretary.
On Thursday, the government was forced to say that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was not aware that the Foreign Office overruled the vetting process “until earlier this week”.
The Foreign Office had said it is "working urgently" to comply with the Prime Minister's request to establish the facts of how developed vetting was granted.
Downing Street sources say the Prime Minister is “absolutely furious”.
