- Description
- Ulster Bank has released the details of a financial package aimed at compensating more than half a million customers affected by the collapse of the bank's computer systems.
The system outage affected more than 600,000 customers in June and July.
Many were denied access to their funds, suffered delayed payments and could not view correct balances. The problem was caused by a corrupted software update applied to the systems at the bank's parent Royal Bank of Scotland in the middle of June.
The refund scheme, which will cost Ulster Bank well in access of the €35 million it initially said the systems collapse would cost, has been broadly welcomed.

- Bankrupt businessman Sean Quinn, his son Sean and nephew Peter Darragh Quinn could face jail after being found guilty of contempt of court orders restraining them putting assets in their international property group beyond the reach of the former Anglo Irish Bank.
All three had acted in a "blatantly dishonest and deceitful" manner and were evasive and unco-operative in their evidence to the court, Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne said today.
While Seán Quinn had told the court his business employing 7,000 people was built up in an honourable and respectable manner, she wished she could say the same about the manner in which the three had dealt with the adverse circumstances in which they found themselves following the collapse of the Quinn empire, she said.
The behaviour of the three outlined in the evidence put before her by the bank was "as far removed form the concept of honour and respectability as it is possible to be", she said.

He was speaking at a Claiming Our Future event earlier today, during which the group launched its "Plan B" campaign it says can generate jobs and protect frontline services in advance of the next Budget.
"Political choices that have been made since the Celtic Tiger started to collapse have all been in one direction and the consequences are plain to be seen now," Mr Finlay said.
"What I think ought to be infuriating all of us and mobilising all of us is the fact that it is only people who don't have a voice who have suffered in the main from the austerity choices that have been made."
