The arithmetic is stark. The 114 additional Rafales and 180 Tejas MK-1A jets together add roughly 16 squadrons. But the retiring Jaguar, MiG-29 and Mirage 2000 fleets will remove around 12 squadrons from service. The net gain is only four to six squadrons, leaving the IAF at 34 to 36, still well short of the sanctioned 42.
This is precisely where the Tejas MK-2 becomes not optional, but indispensable. With around 120 ordered and potentially up to 300 envisaged, the MK-2 is the only aircraft designed to replace the retiring legacy fleets and protect the IAF's baseline strength.
