- On Tuesday, 28 October 2025, Hurricane Melissa made landfall on Jamaica as a powerful Category 5 storm, with sustained winds reaching up to 185 mph according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, well above the minimum 157 mph (252 kph) wind speed of a Category 5 storm, the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale.— the strongest storm ever recorded to hit Jamaica in modern history.
In the days since, the death toll in Jamaica has reached at least 19 confirmed fatalities, and officials warn the number is likely to rise as search and rescue teams access hard-to-reach areas.
The hardest-hit regions include the western and south-western parishes — notably around the coastal town of Black River and the parishes of St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland — where entire neighbourhoods have lost roofs, roads have collapsed, and power and communications are largely knocked out. Some estimates reported up to 90 % of roofs gone in the Black River.

- Every Sunday, in a quiet corner of Apata Street, Shomolu, Lagos, hands rise…not in noise, but in meaning.
Here, a different worship occurs. No Spoken words. No songs. No microphones. Just hands moving, speaking, and praising.
At the Christian Mission for the Deaf Church, a home for people who may not hear sound but feel faith in ways words cannot describe.
Unlike any other churches, for hours on end, the only sounds are exclamations punctuated by the thunderous beat of drums to signal various sessions in the service.
GuardianTV spoke with the church executives to hear the story behind this unique place of worship.
In a world where silence often isolates, this community has turned it into a language of connection.
At the Christian Mission for the Deaf Church, faith doesn’t need sound. It is seen, felt, and shared in the rhythm of their hands.

He previously served as Chief of Army Staff, succeeding General Lagbaja, before his elevation to head the entire Armed Forces.

- Every October, the world observes Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a global initiative that educates individuals, families, and businesses on how to stay safe online. This year’s theme, “Stay Safe Online,” emphasizes that small actions can make a big difference in protecting people and organizations from cyber threats.
In Nigeria, the conversation around cybersecurity has become more urgent as digital activities expand rapidly across banking, e-commerce, education, and government services. According to Check Point Research, Nigerian organizations face an average of 3,759 cyberattacks every week, almost double the global average of 1,876. Another report by Kaspersky revealed that between January and June 2025, incidents of password-stealing malware in Nigeria rose by 66 percent, while spyware attacks increased by 53 percent.
Nigeria currently ranks 19th globally among the countries most exposed to cyber threats. Despite progress in digital inclusion, the In...

- October 24th – United Nations Day – marks 80 years since the UN’s founding in 1945, a global call for peace, human rights, and progress. Today, we honor this mission through Nigeria’s journey – a nation of unyielding strength, scarred by tragedy, yet leading Africa’s charge for a brighter future.
Nigeria joined the UN in 1960, days after independence, becoming a peacekeeping powerhouse. Ranking fifth globally in troop contributions, it bolstered missions like Liberia’s UNMIL, restoring hope post-conflict. But Nigeria’s path has known deep sorrow. On August 26, 2011, Boko Haram’s suicide bombing struck the UN House in Abuja, killing 23 – mostly UN staff – and injuring over 100. This devastating attack, Nigeria’s first major suicide bombing targeting an international entity, exposed the growing terror threat. Since 2009, Boko Haram’s insurgency has displaced millions, attacking schools and communities, yet Nigeria stands firm. Through the UN’s 202...

- When the National Council of State met on Thursday, October 9, 2025, a quiet shift took place in Nigeria’s democratic space.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented a name unfamiliar to many Nigerians, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
His nomination, later approved by the Council, marks the end of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s ten-year tenure and the beginning of a new chapter for the nation’s electoral body.
But who is this man stepping from the lecture halls of the University of Jos into one of the most scrutinized offices in Nigeria?
Born on April 25, 1967, in Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Professor Amupitan’s journey is one defined by scholarship, service, and quiet accomplishment.
He attended Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, before proceeding to the University of Jos, where he obtained his law degree, master’s, a...

- Description
- We often talk about mental health. We talk about physical health. But how often do we talk about emotional health? The truth is, not nearly enough.
Every day, people move through life carrying emotions they never name… anger, fear, loneliness, or even quiet sadness. They smile, they work, they laugh… but deep inside, they’re struggling to hold it all together.
Experts say that emotional health is the foundation of both mental and physical well-being. When people ignore their emotions, they’re more likely to experience burnout, anxiety, and even physical illness. Emotional awareness helps us identify what’s really happening inside, so we can respond, not just react.
Yet, in our society, emotional expression is often misunderstood. We’re taught to be strong, hold it in, or “pray it away.” But strength is not silence. True strength is understanding what you feel and finding healthy ways to deal with it.

- The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory, CP Miller G. This decision follows the circulation of a video on X (formerly Twitter) depicting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) slapping a young man on Wednesday, 22 of October 2025.
The Commissioner of Police strongly condemns the officer’s actions, which fall short of the high standards of discipline, civility, and professionalism expected of police officers. He emphasizes that such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated under his leadership. Consequently, the officer has been redeployed, and the situation is currently under investigation.
While administrative disciplinary steps are being taken, CP Dantawaye reminds all DPOs and their subordinates that they must remain professional, courteous, and law-abiding in the discharge of their duties. He warns tha...

- Behind the wheel: The pain, pressure, and peril of Nigeria’s truck drivers
- Runtime

- Description
- Every day, truck drivers hit the road long before sunrise. They carry everything we depend on: food, fuel, medicine, and more. But behind the wheels are real people, many of them tired, overworked, and under constant pressure. Recently, Nigeria has seen a rise in truck-related accidents. And while it’s easy to point fingers at drivers, the reality is more complex.
Many drivers say they work exhausting shifts with little rest, often pushed by tight deadlines and poor road conditions. Fatigue, they argue, is one of the biggest causes of accidents, leaving them vulnerable to mistakes that can cost lives. Their side of the story highlights a system that demands more than the human body can safely handle.
But not all accidents can be blamed on stress or the system. Some drivers admit that recklessness, substance use, and even quick tempers behind the wheel contribute to the dangers on Nigeria’s highways. In several cases, investigations have revealed drivers sp...

- Description
- There was pandemonium in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Tuesday, after some suspected political thugs set ablaze the state secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of the day, razed the party’s office located at Basiri Area of Ado-Ekiti and destroyed several valuables, including plastic chairs, canopies, sound system, and office equipment.
It was gathered that the burnt canopies and chairs had been rented for the inauguration of the party’s executives across wards, local government areas, and the state level, scheduled to hold later in the day.
Several hours after the secretariat was razed, the hoodlums regrouped in large numbers and stormed the venue of the planned affirmation ceremony, disrupting preparations and attacking party leaders and supporters.
The attackers who stormed the venue in a commando-like style shot sporadically into the air, forcing several mem...
