- Unregistered Point-of-Sale terminals across Nigeria may soon be seized, as the Federal Government tightens regulation on the fintech and agent-banking space.
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) says from January 1, all PoS operators must be formally registered, warning that any terminal operating outside the system risks being shut down or confiscated.
The announcement, made in early December, also places fintech companies under scrutiny, with the CAC warning that platforms enabling unregistered agents could be reported to the Central Bank of Nigeria.
This is not the first time the government has raised the issue. The CAC has previously issued deadlines and extensions for PoS registration, but officials say compliance has remained low, prompting this tougher enforcement.
According to the Commission, the move is aimed at bringing PoS operators under one regulatory umbrella, in line with the Companies and Allied Matters Act and CBN guidelin...

- Nigeria is navigating a delicate diplomatic situation after personnel of the Nigerian Air Force were detained in Burkina Faso following an emergency landing.
What began as a routine safety decision mid-flight has now escalated into a cross-border military and legal issue, drawing attention across the region and online.
The Nigerian aircraft was en route from Lagos to Portugal on 8 December 2025 when the crew detected a technical problem shortly after takeoff, prompting a diversion to the nearest airfield in line with safety protocols.
However, Burkinabe authorities detained the crew and impounded the aircraft, saying the plane entered Burkina Faso’s airspace without prior authorisation, an allegation the Alliance of Sahel States describes as a violation of sovereignty.
As of the time of this report, 11 Nigerian military personnel remain in custody in Burkina Faso, days after their C-130 aircraft made a precautionary landing in Bob...

- The senior pastor of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo, has cast doubts on the electoral prospects of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, in the northern region ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking in an interview with Outside the Box, Ashimolowo suggested that Obi’s support in the north may be extremely limited.
“The chance of Peter Obi getting five per cent in 12 core Northern states will be a miracle because Nigeria has not healed,” he said. “He is a fantastic man, he is a gifted man, he could do well, he could achieve, he has proven himself but he can’t win 5 per cent in the north.”
Obi, who ran as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, finished third behind President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Despite the loss, he maintained strong support among...

- President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to expedite the training and arming of additional forest guards as part of renewed efforts to confront kidnapping and terrorism across the country.
The directive, issued on Wednesday, reinforces earlier approvals for the establishment of a national forest security service designed to secure Nigeria’s forest reserves, which have long served as operational bases for bandits and other armed groups.
Addressing ongoing security concerns, the President said, “We face challenges here and there of kidnapping and terrorism. We need all the forces we can utilise. We need to protect our people.”
The Presidency said the decision aims to strengthen security presence in remote and forested areas where criminal networks have expanded their activities. The enhanced deployment is expected to support wider national measures already announced in response to persistent in...

- Description
- The Court of Appeal has affirmed a landmark judgment preventing Vehicle Inspection Officers—or VIO—from stopping and impounding vehicles on Nigerian roads. This ruling comes after a series of legal challenges aimed at curbing what many motorists described as unlawful harassment and extortion by VIO personnel.
The court held that VIOs do not have statutory powers to stop, detain, or impound vehicles, emphasizing that such actions fall outside their legal mandate. According to the judgment, the role of VIOs is strictly limited to vehicle inspection at authorized inspection centers, not traffic enforcement on highways.
This decision upholds the rights of motorists and underscores proper adherence to due process and regulatory frameworks. It also directs law enforcement agencies to review and align their operational protocols to avoid further unlawful disruption on the nation’s roads.
Motorists and transport unions have welcomed the ruling, desc...
