- A bus crash that resulted in a fatal fire killed 25 people and injured eight in Maharashtra, India on Saturday, according to officials.
Local police said that the passenger bus crashed into a road divider in the early hours of July 1, causing significant damage to the vehicle’s fuel tank, causing a fire and trapping the passengers — only a fraction of which made it out alive.
Police Superintendent Sunil Kadasane said though eight people managed to escape the bus, 25 had died, further claiming that the deaths were more a result of the fire than the crash itself.
In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on Twitter, saying he would provide support to each of the victim's families, amounting to 700,000 Indian rupees (approx. $11.295 CAD).

SpaceX launched the European Space Agency’s Euclid observatory toward its ultimate destination 1.5 million kilometers away, the Webb Space Telescope’s neighborhood. It will take a month to get there and another two months before it starts its ambitious six-year survey this fall.
Named for antiquity’s Greek mathematician, Euclid will scour billions of galaxies covering more than one-third of the sky. By pinpointing the location and shape of galaxies up to 10 billion light-years away — almost all the way back to the cosmos-creating Big Bang — scientists hope to glean insight into the dark energy and dark matter that make up most of the universe and keep it expanding.

- A deep-sea submersible carrying five people on a voyage to the century-old wreck of the Titanic was found in pieces from a "catastrophic implosion" that killed everyone aboard, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Thursday.
Will Kohnen, chairman of peer-review group Marine Technology Society's (MTS) committee on manned submersibles, said the implosion of the vessel would have happened instantly - calling it a "mercy" for those on board versus a slow death on the ocean floor
"It exploded inwards in a matter of a thousandth of a second. And it's probably a mercy because that was probably a kinder end than the unbelievably difficult situation of being four days in the cold, dark, in a confined space," he said.
"So, this would have happened very quickly. I don't think anybody even had the time to realize what happened," he added.

- A panel of judges voted Friday to bar far-right former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro from running for public office until 2030 after concluding that he abused his power and cast unfounded doubts on the country’s electronic voting system.
Bolsonaro responded by saying that this was a “stab in the back” and promised that “it is not the end of the right in Brazil.”
The decision forbids Bolsonaro from running until 2030, upending the 68-year-old’s political future and likely erasing any chance for him to regain power.
Five out of seven judges on the nation’s highest electoral court agreed that Bolsonaro abused his authority by using government communication channels to promote his campaign and sowing doubts about the vote.

- The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday struck down affirmative action in college admissions, forcing institutions of higher education to look for new ways to achieve diverse student bodies.
The court’s conservative majority overturned admissions plans at Harvard and the University of North Carolina, the nation’s oldest private and public colleges, respectively.
Chief Justice John Roberts said for too long universities have “concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not challenges bested, skills built or lessons learned but the color of their skin. Our constitutional history does not tolerate that choice."
U.S. President Joe Biden said in remarks following the court’s decision that he “strongly disagree(s)” with the court’s decision, adding it “can’t be the last word.”
“You know, I know today’s court decision is a severe disappointment to many people, including me. But we cannot let th...

- Bestselling author Daniel Kalla appeared on "The Morning Show," where he chatted about delving into the dark world of diet culture with his new thriller, "Fit to Die." The book follows an LA detective and toxicologist based in Vancouver, B.C., investigating a growing number of overdoses linked to a toxic diet pill, including a social media influencer who dies in a Vancouver hotel.
Kalla masterfully intertwines his roles as an ER physician and acclaimed writer to create a searing critique of a culture that promotes toxic diet pills and body shaming.
"Everybody wants the quick fix, you know. It's more important to be comfortable in your own skin than what you weigh, but that's a tough message to get across to people," Kalla tells our hosts Jeff McArthur and Carolyn MacKenzie.
Kalla also shares his concerns about Ozempic and other weight loss drugs, which he says can be "a great medicine for the right person" but he fears is being "overused and abu...

Thousands marched in the streets demanding justice for Nahel, as the officer involved had been put under formal investigation for voluntary homicide.
At the march, protesters railed against what they perceived as a culture of police impunity and a failure to reform law enforcement.
"Why do we want to give them [police] more weapons? There have already been some [incidents] like his before, and we don't want any more. By killing Nahel, they killed our child," local official Karima Khatim told reporters.

The shooting of the teenager Nahel, who was of North African origin, has fuelled long-running complaints of police brutality in the ethnically diverse suburbs of France's biggest cities.
“Today, there is shock, mourning, anger,” French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said, while calling for calm after overnight clashes. “The shocking images broadcast yesterday show an intervention that clearly does not seem to comply with the rules of engagement of our law enforcement officers."
"It's a bit of society's misfortune, there are a lot of problems, and I think we're all responsible," supermarket employee Amadou Dagnoko said in Nanterre. "I can't talk about what really happened. But i...

Impacted simultaneously by all the conditions is the nation’s beekeeping industry.
Not only did the floods kill thousands of bee colonies, but they also ruined mass supplies of honey, leaving workers with little to nothing to show.
On Wednesday, the president of the National Beekeeping Movement Mario Flores called upon the Chilean government to come to the “immediate” aid of the industry and its workers.

- The Canadian-flagged ‘Horizon Artic’ returned to port in St. John’s, N.L., on Wednesday carrying the remains of OceanGate Expedition’s Titan submersible.
The submersible went missing on June 18 while on an expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic in the North Atlantic. Five people were aboard the vessel.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed last Thursday that searchers had found pieces of the Titan near the Titanic and that it had suffered a “catastrophic implosion.”
Pelagic Research Services, an ocean services company whose remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was used in the Titan search and recovery said in a statement Wednesday it had successfully completed off-shore operations.
It is expected the debris unloaded in Newfoundland could help shed light on what caused the implosion of the Titan.
