- GALVESTON — A demolition worker was "extremely critical" after becoming trapped by a 1,000-pound concrete slab, which fell Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at the Flagship Hotel. Officials announced the following day that the worker died. Crews were demolishing the structure, which was occupied before Hurricane Ike struck Galveston, to make way for planned amusement rides.

The driver of a 2010 Ferrari California took the brunt of the impact and was admitted in good condition to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. - Authorities evacuated Walter Hall Park on Friday, April 15, 2011, after a man was found dead in his car, apparently from inhaling hydrogen sulfide gas, a fire official said.
League City firefighters and police were sent to the park, 807 state Highway 3, at 11:15 a.m., and found a man dead in the car, League City Fire Marshal Wanda Martin said.
The man had called emergency officials ahead of time, and put stickers on the car windows, saying "danger" and "hydrogen sulfide," police Sgt. John Jordan said.

- TEXAS CITY — A group of about 50 teachers, parents, students and community activists gathered April 8 to support keeping open Simms Elementary, the only La Marque school district campus not within the La Marque city limits.
School board members are exploring the possibility of closing an elementary school in order to trim a $1.13 million budget deficit for the next school year. The school was named after P.S. Simms, the former principal of Lincoln High School, which served West Texas City and La Marque's African-American students during segregation.
