Hungary’s parliament amended the rules on public assemblies in March 2025. This enabled authorities to decide that pro-LGBTIQ+ gatherings infringe the Child Protection Act – implicitly targeting Budapest Pride’s 30th edition, scheduled for 28 June 2025.
MEPs visited Hungary in April 2025 and warned that the government’s ban on pro-LGBTIQ+ public events is not just an attack on the community, but a direct violation of the basic human and civil rights enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the EU’s core values.
