- More than 16 million tonnes of bottles, bags and other plastic packaging waste
were generated in the EU in 2021.
This ever-increasing number heavily contributes to environmental pollution. New EU rules aim to reverse
this trend by:
♻️ Setting packaging reduction targets for EU countries
♻️ Banning many types of single-use plastic packaging, e.g. for certain fresh fruit and vegetables
♻️ Requiring plastic packaging to include a minimum percentage of recycled plastic
And introducing other measures to reduce, reuse and recycle packaging waste.

For example the first comprehensive regulation on artificial intelligence to laws securing social rights for people working on digital platforms or ensuring that appliances can be fixed at affordable prices.

- In times of polarised ideas, widespread disinformation and cross border conflicts, how are we protecting the integrity of European institutions and democracy? Researchers and NGOs all over Europe are studying ways to make societies more resilient to crises and to foreign actors trying to interfere in our democratic processes.
Two such researchers are Julia from the Clingendael Institute for International Relations in the Netherlands and Katarina from the Centre for Democracy & Resilience at the GLOBSEC Policy Institute in Slovakia. They specialise in the Western Balkan states and EU accession countries like Ukraine.
The European Parliament backs legislation helping promote this kind of research and recognises the importance of independent bodies. Learn more about how Parliament is fighting the threats to EU democracy here: https://europa.eu/!rg6kY7.
