- Description

- Runtime

- Description
- Hydrogen has become a central element of EU plans to reach net-zero emission by mid-century. The hydrogen strategy relies partly on imports of hydrogen produced from places like North Africa, the Arabic Peninsula and Ukraine. How will this work in practice?
Globally, 50% of all hydrogen is today produced by the fertiliser industry who uses it to produce ammonia, the main building block for all other nitrogen fertilisers.
Storing and transporting hydrogen is a challenge as it is the smallest and lightest molecule in nature and it liquefies only at the extremely low temperature of -253 degrees Celsius. Ammonia, though a different molecule, has 50 % more hydrogen than hydrogen itself. It also liquifies at -33 degrees and can be handled easily, similarly to liquified natural gas.
To deliver on the net-zero objective, Europe needs decarbonised fuels in sectors where electrification is not an option – like heavy industry, some areas of transport or he...

- With its Climate Law, Europe will be the first continent in the world to have a climate neutrality target for 2050. Whilst this will produce a positive environmental impact, it is expected that some sectors will suffer economically with job losses. Other sectors will see a shift in how they produce goods, requiring reskilling and upskilling of the workforce. And some regions will be more affected than others. Trade unions argue that the European Green Deal risks deepening economic and social divisions between Member States in the east and west.
The European Commission was criticised by some when it was confirmed the Climate Law would not include an updated overall benchmark for 2030 – currently set at 40% emissions cuts. The Commission’s impact assessment will reportedly try to demonstrate that a 55% cut in emissions will cost the same or close to the 40% target, by updating investment costs in green technologies such as wind turbines, and re-evaluating the costs of bu...

European citizens and businesses have had to radically realign their lives to the new reality. While IT teams struggled with the data security and privacy challenge of a sudden migration to remote working, politicians grappled with how and whether to maintain privacy safeguards as data was shared for contact tracing and medical research.
Following the introduction of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2016 and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the pace of adoption of modernised data protection laws has accelerated across the world. Regardless of their country, customers and companies across the globe demand a consistent high-level of protection.
In the years to come, data protection laws will continue to evolve, as will data privacy. The international flow of data will be ...

The response measures are resulting in a severe shock to the economy, with many businesses currently unsure of their ability to survive. The IMF predicts (WEO, 6th April) a global economic contradiction equal to -3% of global GDP in 2020, with alternative scenarios forecasting a -5% to -7% depending on a longer COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 and/or a new outbreak in 2021.
While we are still adapting to the effect of the crisis, some lessons can already be drawn. On the positive side, many companies and people have displayed a high-level of creativity in seeking solutions to the crisis. On the negative side, the pandemic has laid bare vulnerabilities due to a clear lack of digital infrastructure and data pooling necessary to identify the threat and enact appropriate containment measures.
