- Description
- Over the past few weeks, all eyes have been on France where farmers are scrambling to save their crops after a catastrophic frost swept through the country in what French agriculture minister Julien Denormandie has called "probably the greatest agronomic disaster of the early 21st century”.
Besides warming the vulnerable crops, the rows of fires lining France's hills have thrown light on the fact that climate change is very much no longer tomorrow's problem.
But what is the agricultural sector doing to cope with the coming climate crises? What exactly is carbon farming, and how can it contribute to the adaptation and mitigation of climate change in the sector? And what support is on offer for the sector which faces the full brunt of climate change? EURACTIV takes a closer look in this video reportage.

- Description
- According to OECD projections, by 2030, the “Blue Economy” could outperform the growth of the global economy as a whole, both in terms of value added and employment. A sector with a turnover of €750 billion that currently employs 5 million people in Europe presents an important potential in terms of both its contribution to a green recovery and the European Green Deal goals.
The marine economy is typically associated with traditional activities such as fishing or transport, but we are witnessing the emergence of an increasing number of innovative sectors including marine renewable energy, which is on track to produce up to 35% of the EU's electricity by 2050. The EU is a global leader in offshore wind energy, one of the fastest growing sectors, but also in developing other emerging and promising technologies like tidal and wave energy and floating solar panels and wind turbines.
The EU’s Integrated Maritime Policy aims to adopt a more coherent European...

- Description
- The rise of antimicrobial resistance is a looming global crisis, threatening our ability to treat common infectious diseases, resulting in prolonged illness, disability, and death.
Over-use and misuse of antibiotics in animals and humans is contributing to the rising threat of antibiotic resistance. WHO reports that in some countries approximately 80% of total consumption of medically important antibiotics is in the animal sector, largely for growth promotion in healthy animals, a practice which is prohibited in Europe.
The Farm to Fork Strategy sets an ambitious target to reduce the sales of antimicrobials for farmed animals by 50% by 2030. To further limit the use and promote prudent and responsible use of antimicrobials in animals, the new regulations on veterinary medicinal products and medicated feed, to apply as of 2022, will provide for a wide range of concrete measures.
The meat sector has already made significant progress in the reduction...

More than ever, European agriculture needs to produce sufficient high-quality food, whilst respecting the environment, safeguarding consumers and supporting farmers.
Farmers need the best tools and technological solutions available to be able to grow enough crops using fewer natural resources. Helping farmers build a stronger and more resilient agricultural economy, requires an open and transparent dialogue and collaboration between scientists, academia, innovators, politicians, regulators, NGOs and all along the food value chain from farmers to consumers.
The EU glyphosate re-approval process is on the agenda. The renewal of glyphosate is an example of an issue that needs in depth discussion among all stakeholders involved. For some farmers, glyphosate already plays an important rol...

- Description
- To become climate-neutral by 2050, the EU plans to transform its energy system, which accounts for 75% of its greenhouse gas emissions.
In July 2020, the Commission presented an EU strategy for energy system integration. The strategy aims to link the various energy carriers - electricity, heat, cold, gas, solid and liquid fuels - with each other and with the end-use sectors, such as buildings, transport or industry. Linking sectors will allow the optimisation of the energy system as a whole, rather than decarbonising and making separate efficiency gains in each sector independently.
The new EU strategy will involve various existing and emerging technologies, processes and business models, such as ICT and digitalisation, smart grids and meters and flexibility markets. Together with a new strategy on hydrogen, it aims to lay the foundation for the decarbonised European energy system of the future.

In recent years, we have seen many initiatives - from energy efficiency (waste heat recovery) and circular economy initiatives (e.g. slag treatment) to hydrogen - to decarbonise industrial processes and economic sectors where reducing carbon emissions is both urgent and hard to achieve. This includes heavy-duty and long-range transport and energy-intensive industrial processes, such as the iron and steel, chemicals, refining and cement industries.
Hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the future decarbonisation of the steel industry and other heavy industries. It can be used as a feedstock, a fuel or an energy carrier and storage, and has many possible applications across industry, ...

- Meeting the EU’s proposed new climate targets for 2030 will require a “transformation” of the bloc’s energy system, with a renewed focus on renewables and further efforts to cut fossil fuels in buildings, transport and industry.
The use of renewable energy has many potential benefits, including a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, the diversification of energy supplies and a reduced dependency on fossil fuel markets (in particular, oil and gas). The growth of renewable energy sources may also stimulate employment in the EU, through the creation of jobs in new ‘green’ technologies.
In electricity, wind and solar power are becoming the largest renewable sources. Hydrogen has become a central element of EU plans to reach net-zero emission by mid-century. It is possible to produce it through a variety of processes resulting in different types of hydrogen: “green hydrogen”, “blue hydrogen” and “turquoise hydrogen”. These are GHG emission...

In the effort to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, gas infrastructure seeks to transport decreasing quantities of natural gas, making way for increasing quantities of renewable and decarbonised gases produced at the local level. Several viable solutions, in various stages of commercialisation, to facilitate renewable gases production and injection into gas networks exist today.
Existing gas infrastructure brings essential flexibility and supply security for energy systems. By design, they are flexible and provide a cost-effective and reliable way to store renewable energy for long periods of time and dispatch it to meet peak demand.<...

- The ongoing health crisis is having a devastating impact on Europe’s restaurants, cafés and bars.
Since the beginning of the crisis, public authorities have been alternating between various combinations of movement and gathering restrictions in an attempt to rein in the spread of the disease. As a result, the sector has faced a patchwork of measures, ranging from curfews to maximum patron capacity to complete closure, often with minimal advance notice.
The threat that the embattled wider hospitality sector faces is existential as many businesses face permanent closure. The impact goes beyond revenue and jobs and into the character of our communities. Local spots and the culture they foster are woven into the social fabric of our neighbourhoods and the European way of life.
Owners are confronted with what seems to be a moving target. After last spring’s lockdowns, they invested in safety and hygiene concepts, only to revert to delivery and tak...

- The EU is in the process of updating its Arctic policy. In this interactive seminar, youth representatives from the European Arctic will have the chance to give their input on Arctic policy directly to the EU, while offering the EU an opportunity to engage and respond.

- Following the first lockdown, Europe’s hospitality sector was the first to take immediate safety measures. However, it has also been the sector that has paid the full cost of the pandemic.
In 18 out of 27 EU member states, pubs, restaurants and cafes remain closed. In the other nine countries, they operate partially with strict measures in place.
Currently, there is no indication when they could be allowed to re-open. Most businesses in the hospitality sector are SMEs and they are seeing debts piling up, despite temporary supportive measures introduced across Europe.
EURACTIV spoke to Constantinos Michalos, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and deputy president of Eurochambres and Simon Spillane, Director of Communications of Brewers of Europe, who shared their views over the future of the sector.
