- The conversation began with California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was in South LA to meet with community leaders and business owners. He spoke exclusively with Elex Michaelson, who served as pool reporter.
The conversation with Newsom, recorded Wednesday, took place as news broke Derek Chauvin, the officer seen on tape with his knee on Floyd’s neck, had his murder charge elevated from third- to second-degree, and that the other officers had also been arrested and charged with aiding and abetting.
Newsom said the charges were “encouraging” and “long overdue.”
“It was murder, we witnessed it with our own eyes,” Newsom said. “We’re putting people away for 15, 25 to life for murder. And so, the idea of 3rd-degree murder never sat well for any of us.”

First, she reacted to the arrest of Derek Chauvin, the former officer charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in the Floyd case.
“How many times do we have to see black people killed on video, and for there not to be an arrest immediately?” Bass asked, saying the third-degree murder charge was insufficient.
Bass added that the other officers seen in the Floyd video should also be arrested and charged immediately, and that further investigation is needed, especially as reports emerge that Floyd and Chauvin may have previously worked together.
In regards to the protests, Bass noted that the protestors, who hail from all races and backgrounds, are hurting, and that “they should continue to [participate], but absolutely, without the violence.”

“The problem is we don’t have enough testing,” Brown said. “With more testing, we need more tracing!"
Brown said that Governor Newsom has done what he can, testing roughly 30K Californians a day, but that that number needs to be elevated to at least a few hundred thousand a day, especially if students plan to go back to school.
The main way to bring that testing number up though, Brown said, is for the President to invoke the War Powers Act, mobilizing industries to produce quick and reliable tests, free of competition or rivalry. Rep. Adam Schiff thinks the federal government should guarantee a company's payroll during the coronavirus crisis.
"Have the federal government guarantee a large percent of payroll, 80, or 90, or even 100% of payroll," Schiff said. Beyond Jayapal's proposal, which would guarantee 100% of payroll, a separate proposal in the Senate from Josh Hawley (R-MO) would guarantee 80% of pay.

They started a daily Instagram live show where they talk with high profile people who are also using their platforms to fundraise for & inspire those hardest hit by #coronavirus.
"What we wanted to do here was talk to people who are helping, talk to people who want to use their voices to heal, and talk to people who are trying to cultivate hope," Shriver said.
Among their high profile guests, Shriver and Schwarzenegger have spoken with the likes of Guy Fieri & Jose Andres about helping restaurant workers, Bethenny Frankel on finding supplies without being price-gouged, and Governor Gavin Newsom about leading the state.

- U.S. Senator Kamala Harris is working to pass another stimulus bill through Congress. She's also calling for a suspension of credit card interest payments, penalties, and fees.
“A lot of folks don’t have savings and are going to end up having to pay for groceries on their credit cards, and no one should be profiting off their desperation to be able to feed their children and be able to get through the end of the month," Harris said.
This week, Harris also joined some 50 Democratic lawmakers seeking increased direct relief for struggling Americans.
Last month, Congress passed a $1,200 one time payment for most Americans, to help them get through this time. Sen. Harris thinks the payments should be recurring.

- As Americans struggle to make ends meet during the outbreak, Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) is calling for a suspension of credit card interest payments, penalties, and fees.

Carson says he's working closely with California Governor Gavin Newsom & Mayor Eric Garcetti.

California & the federal govenrment are procuring hotel & motel rooms, trailers, and other structures to get people off the streets.

Ben Carson is serving on the White House Task Force on the coronavirus.
He says an antibody test will be out shortly in mass quantities. Carson is hopeful this could determine who is "safe to go back to work."

- Dr. Oz kicks things off by evaluating the response to coronavirus in California, especially as the rates of infection and mortality have lagged behind many other less-populated states.
Oz called much of the state's response "nimble," "sage," and "decisive." While looking at Los Angeles specifically, which has yet to become a hot-spot akin to New York City, Oz pointed to aggressive social distancing practices, the non-reliance on public transportation, and early decisions to shutter schools and encourage wearing face masks.
Face masks have recently become the subject of much debate nationally, in fact, during Friday's White House briefing, President Trump found himself in hot water when he said, despite CDC recommendations to wear masks in public, he would not."Wearing a mask is great, if you can find it," Oz said. - Now the House and Senate have passed the CARES Act, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-CA37) breaks down how the bill will impact those Americans sitting at home weathering the storm.
"If you filed your taxes, and had a direct deposit, you just get money put directly into your account," Bass said. "If you didn't have direct deposit, then it will take you a little longer, and you'll get a check in the mail, and the check should be out in just a couple of weeks."
Bass added that while checks are helpful, they won't help pay all the bills if Americans don't have a regular income, so unemployment insurance enhancements will also be beneficial to Americans struggling through the crisis.
