- Could a migration crisis in Spain help Republicans in November's midterms? | DW News

- Description
- Spain said on Friday it had reversed a huge rush of migrants into Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, with most of the more than 50,000 people who had crossed the border by land and sea already heading back voluntarily. A government representative in Ceuta said 57 bodies had been recovered on the Spanish side of the border and that there could be additional casualties on the Moroccan side.
US President Donald Trump, a long-time critic of Spain's Socialist-led government, told a cabinet meeting the Ceuta crossings "look like an invasion," adding: "That same thing's going to happen to us if the Republicans don't get elected, except worse," referring to upcoming midterm elections.
The State Department on X pointed the blame squarely at the Spanish government, saying the incident was a direct result of its migration policies. "We are considering actions to defend Americans at home and abroad from this threat and stand ready to assist other European allies considering simi...

- Description
- Peter Magyar came to power promising to dismantle Viktor Orban's authoritarian system and restore Hungary's democratic institutions. But just months into office, he's using sweeping constitutional powers, removing Orbán-era officials, and pushing through rapid reforms that some critics say look uncomfortably familiar. So is Magyar doing what it takes to undo 15 years of democratic backsliding, or is Hungary witnessing the rise of a new strongman? DW Correspondent Teri Schultz and Princeton professor Kim Lane Scheppele assess whether Brussels is starting to worry, why the EU is largely backing Magyar for now, and whether democracy can be rebuilt using the very powers that helped erode it.
Note from the editor: In this video our guest states President Tamas Sulyok was removed due to age limits. This is incorrect. Mr. Sulyok was removed due to a constitutional amendment.

- European nations have voted unanimously to boycott the World Cup – that is, if world football's governing body FIFA goes ahead with its plan to sell stakes in the tournament to private investors. The project, floated by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, would be financed by a company with family ties to Donald Trump's adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner. DW’s Brent Goff talks about the unprecedented vote by UEFA with Miguel Maduro, the former chairman of FIFA’s Governance and Independent Review Committees.

Local officials called on Spain to declare a national emergency and send the army to restore the border, but the government said it cannot declare a national emergency over migration concerns. DW’s Brent Goff spoke to journalist Stephen Burgen about the hundreds of migrants who mainly swam to the exclave. Activists reported that three people died attempting to reach Ceuta by sea. Editor's Note: DW observed roughly 500,000 fewer files in its February collection of the Epstein Library than in an earlier archived version, but the discrepancy may not solely reflect file removals.

In Congress, the Democratic Party is hoping to take control of the House of Representatives, but the topic of Israel and its war in Gaza is becoming one of the Democratic Party's biggest fault lines. DW's Ines Pohl traveled across the country to meet the people at the heart of the divide and ask whether the party can hold together, while DW’s Brent Goff spoke to Sarah Yerkes - a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment and former State Department official who worked on Israeli-Palestinian affairs.

- Former top US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment and declined to answer questions in a contentious Republican-led Senate committee hearing about his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. This shows that the US is still divided over the COVID era, its restrictions on social life and the measures to curb the spread of the virus. Timothy Hagle, associate professor of political science at the University of Iowa, tells us why today's hearing did not contribute to a reconciliation six years after the health crisis began.
