- Inside the battle to protect Borneo’s last orangutans | DW Reporter

- Description
- Palm oil is chipping away at Borneo’s rainforest. As orangutans lose their habitat, local people are fighting to preserve the forest.
Deforestation is destroying wildlife in Kalimantan and pushing Borneo's orangutans dangerously close to the point of extinction. A recent study shows that deforestation in this part of Indonesia is progressing moer rapidly than in any other part. On a boat tour deep inside Borneo's jungle, accompanied by a local guide, we search for wild orangutans in one of the last intact rainforest areas where they can still survive. It is an ecosystem under pressure as large parts of the jungle have already been cleared for palm oil plantations and mining.
Former loggers, who once made a living from cutting down these forests, are now trying to make ends meet through tourism—a last-ditch effort to protect what remains of their forest. However, there are also reforestation projects aimed at the difficult and lengthy process of restoration. Conservati...

- Description
- France has passed a bill that allows assisted dying under certain conditions. For Philippe who was terminally ill, the bill came too late. He had to go abroad with his family to end his life on his own terms.
France has passed a controversial assisted dying law that would allow certain adults with incurable illnesses to seek medical help to end their lives under strict conditions. Supporters view the measure as a step toward dignity, freedom of choice and end-of-life self-determination. Critics, including disability rights activists, warn of risks for vulnerable people and argue that access to palliative care should come first. The debate reflects deep divisions over euthanasia, patient rights and how society cares for people facing serious illness.

- Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has urged Vladimir Putin to freeze the war in Ukraine, while sitting alongside his Russian counterpart at a summit in Siberia. Suggesting that negotiations be revived, Tokayev said that ‘young people are dying’ and that ‘all this has to be stopped’. His comments are notable given Kazakhstan's close ties with Russia, even as Astana has consistently avoided endorsing Moscow's offensive. We examine why Tokayev chose to make the remarks publicly - and if they signal growing pressure on the Kremlin to pursue a diplomatic path.

France has deployed troops and a military cargo plane to help battle the flames, while firefighters in Spain say some blazes are spreading so fast that they cannot be fought head-on. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the French fires as unprecedented after one became so intense that it began generating its own winds. Despite cooler temperatures offering some relief, authorities warn the threat is far from over. We speak to our correspondents in Bordeaux and Madrid about Europe's escalating wildfire crisis.

- Description
- Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is facing one of the most significant domestic political challenges of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Thousands of protesters have launched open-ended demonstrations demanding the reinstatement of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, widely credited with driving military innovation, tackling procurement corruption and modernising Ukraine's armed forces. Although Zelenskyy replaced Ukraine's commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi after public pressure, demonstrators say that is not enough and are continuing to demand Fedorov's return.
Our correspondent Nick Connolly reports from Kyiv, and we speak with anti-corruption expert Tetiana Shevchuk from Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Action Centre about what this political crisis could mean for Ukraine's government, defence reforms and President Zelenskyy's leadership.

- Saudi Arabia and the US have announced a nuclear deal that has rocked the Gulf. The landmark agreement would establish a civilian nuclear program in Saudi Arabia with the help of US companies. Critics fear it could lead to Saudi Arabia developing nuclear weapons or even set off a nuclear arms race in the Gulf.
This deal is likely to be a new layer of a deep-seated and bitter rivalry in the Gulf, between Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The UAE already has a nuclear deal with the US, albeit a less extensive one. This news of this controversial deal follows attacks from Iran on the Gulf in the context of the US-Israeli war on Iran. This war has transformed the Gulf and sharpened the Saudi-UAE rivalry further.
The countries' leaders Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) of Saudi Arabia and Mohammed bin Zayed (MbZ) of the UAE used to be bros, but their race to dominate the Gulf has soured the relationship.

- What does forced labor really have to do with Trump's tariffs? | DW News
- Runtime

- Description
- Are the new US tariffs really intended to combat forced labor around the globe, as Washington claims? Or is it about the Trump administration asserting its power?
The United States has slapped new tariffs on 60 economies. After facing legal challenges to previous tariffs, the Trump administration is making use of a little-known law that allows it to impose levies on countries that buy products made by forced labor.
Simon J. Evenett, professor at IMD Business School, tells host Pablo Foley Elias that the forced labor explanation is a "contrivance." DW's Kassandra Sundt explains that the tariffs place a high burden on vulnerable countries to prove that they do not buy products made by forced labor.
