- JCPS superintendent Brian Yearwood condemned a fatal shooting near a school bus stop in the Russell neighborhood Wednesday.
A woman was walking with her young child to a JCPS bus stop when she was struck by gunfire near 11th and West Chestnut streets. She was taken to UofL Hospital for treatment, but was later pronounced dead.
"This is not just a tragedy, it's outrageous. It's unacceptable," Yearwood said at a press conference hours after the shooting. "No one should be scared to stand at a bus stop. No one should worry that their child will be the next victim of gun violence."

However, in June, a spokesperson for the mayor said allegations in a lawsuit claiming officers were at the store on the orders of the mayor were “completely false.”
LMPD’s deployment to Dixie Highway liquors resulted in multiple arrests and uses of force against individuals police accused of loitering. At least two lawsuits have been filed over the incidents.
