The Department of Children and Family Services held its 30th Annual “Celebration 2018,” a graduation ceremony for foster youth at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Each one of these graduates have had their own unique journey in getting there. One of the 169 graduates is Austin Astrup whose journey includes tragedy and heartache. Austin and his sister moved in with their uncle Paul after becoming homeless. They received a stable environment, and the County helped provide additional help. DCFS social workers have been pivotal in providing support and resources to foster youth, and now they get to celebrate the graduation of this group of high school graduates.

This program has saved more than 1,400 kittens since its inception in April 2017 and shows great promise for replication at other animal care centers. In the Pee Wee program, kittens that can eat without assistance but are still too young for adoption, are placed into foster homes where they are raised until they are old enough for placement. CityWalk was among 36 spots across Los Angeles County that offered free Hands-Only CPR instruction provided by local firefighters, emergency medical technicians and nurses. This one-day event also included an AED Learning Lab that gave residents an interactive station that showed users how to properly use an automated external defibrillator. Also featured at the event was a Hands-Only CPR Learning Lab, which had instructional stations that taught Hands-Only CPR on high fidelity manikins connected to touch screen laptops so participants could practice and do a test sessions that generated scores and provided real-time feedback on their training.
