- 15-percent of us will be considered as disabled, permanently or temporarily, at some time or other during our lives, according to a recent global study.
Philippe Croizon climbed on to the roof of his house in France to take down a television aeriel and inadvertently touched an overhead power line. He received a massive electrical shock and severe burns. Psychologically and physically, he is learning to live with restricted arm and leg movement. Philippe has battled to come to terms with his disability and with the way others perceive him. He swam the English Channel and has gone on to challenge his body and stereotypes of disability by setting himself swimming targets across the world.
In this interview with the Council of Europe, in Dublin, Ireland during a conference on disability, Philippe explains the day-to-day pitfalls he experiences living in a European country. He also outlines his vision for tackling prejudice.

- Description
- Professor of Politics at Princeton University and leading expert on populism, Jan-Werner recently gave a lecture at the Council of Europe entitled "How Populism endangers Democracy – and how to fight it".
One of the world's leading experts on populism, Professor Müller defines populists as a kind of "moral majority" who regard anyone who disagrees with them as either illegitimate or disloyal to the "will of the people". According to Professor Müller, this approach represents a real danger to democracy, because it could lead to the tyranny of the majority over the minority.
Speaking about the European Union, he advocates the upholding of basic democratic standards in all of its member states, including Poland and Hungary, even if this requires the imposition of sanctions.
Further afield, he urges democrats to call out contradictions and expose misleading propaganda espoused by the populists, and to put pressure on supporters of populism within ...

- The approach of the Council of Europe in the fight against corruption has always been multidisciplinary and consists of three interrelated elements: the setting of European norms and standards, monitoring of compliance with the standards and capacity building offered to individual countries and regions, through technical co-operation programmes.
The Council of Europe has developed a number of multifaceted legal instruments dealing with matters such as the criminalisation of corruption in the public and private sectors, liability and compensation for damage caused by corruption, conduct of public officials and the financing of political parties. These instruments are aimed at improving the capacity of States to fight corruption domestically as well as at international level. The monitoring of compliance with these standards is entrusted to the Group of States against Corruption, GRECO.
