- CDC and Nigeria collaborate for COVID-19 response (3 minutes long)

- Description
- Nigeria has Africa’s largest population with 216 million people and has been severely impacted by COVID-19. CDC and Nigeria worked together to respond and save lives. US-CDC provided help with epidemiology (detecting disease), laboratory, surveillance, case management, infection prevention and control, risk communications, and vaccine uptake and safety. Nigeria CDC (NCDC) used prior investment from the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to repurpose laboratories to test for COVID-19. CDC utilized the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) to teach public health emergency management to more than 200 frontline responders. Nigeria was then able to set up Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) services at the country’s points of entry, including airports, seaports, and land borders, to help control the spread of COVID-19. These investments will continue to be valuable to keep up the COVID-19 response and address the next public health threat.

- Description
- Mixing drugs, also known as polysubstance use, occurs when two or more drugs are taken together or within a short time period, intentionally or unintentionally. Even if someone has mixed drugs before, or mixes drugs often, the body can react differently every time. Whether it’s prescription drugs, illicit drugs, and/or alcohol, it is not safe to mix drugs. Combining different types of drugs, such as multiple stimulants (like cocaine and meth) or stimulants and depressants (like amphetamines and alcohol) can yield different, harmful reactions. For more information about mixing drugs, the risks of specific drug combinations, and what to do if someone has overdosed, visit cdc.gov/stopoverdose/polysubstance-use.

- Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Illicitly manufactured fentanyl is being added to other drugs because of its extreme potency, which makes drugs cheaper, more powerful, more addictive, and more dangerous. Drugs may contain deadly levels of fentanyl, and you wouldn’t be able to see it, taste it, or smell it. However, fentanyl test strips are a simple, inexpensive, and effective way to test drugs for fentanyl and help prevent overdose. Learn more about the dangers of fentanyl and ways to protect yourself at cdc.gov/stopoverdose/fentanyl.
