Sleet occurs when snowflakes only partially melt when they fall through a shallow layer of warm air. These slushy drops refreeze as they next fall through a deep layer of freezing air above the surface, and eventually reach the ground as frozen rain drops that bounce on impact. Depending on the intensity and duration, sleet can accumulate on the ground much like snow.
Freezing rain occurs when snowflakes descend into a warmer layer of air and melt completely. When these liquid water drops fall through another thin layer of freezing air just above the surface, they don't have enough time to refreeze before reaching the ground. Because they are “supercooled,” they instantly refreeze upon contact with anything that that is at or below freezing (32 degrees F), creating a glaze of ice on the ground, trees, power lines, or other objects. Even light accumulations can cause dangerous travel, while heavier amounts ...

- Description
- The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Watches for portions of North Carolina and South Carolina for this weekend. The forecast calls for a winter storm to bring accumulation ice and snow to the Carolinas, including Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, Hickory, Boone, Blowing Rock, Asheville, Spartanburg, and Greenville.
Tonight, we're discussing the impacts of the storm, and the factors that could greatly change who sees snow, ice, freezing rain, or sleet.
The position of the low-pressure system over the Southeast will determine who sees snow, freezing rain, sleet, or rain.
Confidence is high that the mountains of North Carolina will see snow. The National Weather Service is calling for upwards of a foot of snow in places like Asheville, with upwards of ten inches in Boone, Blowing Rock, Morganton, and Hickory.
Mixing between snow, freezing rain, and sleet is expected to drop snowfall accumulations in Cha...

Very tiny new satellites could make it easier to see, predict, and forecast tropical weather.
Compared to traditional satellites, this train of nanosatellites will collect more frequent measurements around the globe, allowing scientists to study storms as they develop and then use the newly-acquired knowledge to improve forecasting capabilities. While smaller, these new satellites can send back more frequent data than traditional polar-orbiting satellites.
Our guest this week on the Carolina Weather Group is Wired Magazine Reporter Meghan Herbst, who covered the satellites for the technology publication: https://www.wired.com/story/tiny-satellites-could-help-warn-of-the-next-big-hurricane/
On August 8, 2021, NASA’s TROPICS Pathfinder satellite captured global first light images as well as a look inside the structure of Hurricane Ida before and after it made landfall.

- Description
- Weather forecast confidence is growing that a weekend storm in North Carolina and South Carolina could bring winter weather to parts of the Carolinas Saturday night through Sunday.
The low-pressure system will bring moisture throughout the Carolinas, including snow in the western North Carolina mountains and foothills (including Asheville, Boone, Blowing Rock, Morganton, and Hickory).
Uncertainty remains but temperatures could allow winter precipitation - snow, sleet, freezing rain, or ice - to fall throughout the Piedmont and Interstate 85 corridor. Locations that should be monitoring for potential impacts from a winter storm include but are not limited to: Greenville, Spartanburg, Charlotte, Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, Raleigh, and Durham. As the days draw closer to the weekend, the forecast is expected to develop to better pinpoint which Carolina cities could see snow, ice or, rain.
Impacts from winter weather include freezing temper...

- #northcarolina #southcarolina #weather
With Winter Storm Warnings in effect for portions of North Carolina including Asheville, Boone, and Blowing Rock, we're using radar observations to determine where the precipitation is falling as rain versus snow.
If enough cold air mixes in, snow could fall in more places than just the mountains and foothills. These locations would potentially include Hickory, Charlotte, Greenville, Spartanburg, Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, Raleigh, Durham, and more.
These are radar observations as seen from the National Weather Service radar site in Roanoke, Virginia. Radar observes the weather in the atmosphere above the ground. In some locations, snow could melt before it reaches the ground. Look for icons overlayed on the radar from weather spotters on the ground providing ground truth to what the radar is observing. Submit your own reports via the mPING app.
