- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- The Carolina Weather Group is tracking Tropical Storm Arthur and the rainfall and flooding threat it poses to parts of the Carolinas.
The Weird Setup: Arthur is an incredibly lopsided and disorganized system. While its center of circulation has been hanging out over land near Galveston Bay and the Texas coast, the actual thunderstorm activity is firing hundreds of miles away, due south of Louisiana.
What it Means for the Carolinas: An approaching cold front is going to steer Arthur’s post-tropical remnants directly into the Deep South and right into our backyards.
Heavy Rain & Flash Flooding: Expect a general soaking across the region. The Weather Prediction Center has placed the Upstate, Midlands, and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) of South Carolina under a Level 2 of 4 "Slight Risk" for isolated flash flooding.
Severe & Tornado Threats: This system is bringing plenty of low-level wind shear. We are tracking a Level 1 of 5 margina...

- Description
- James Brierton and Greg Fishel sat down for a fascinating chat with Evan Bentley, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC). If you’ve looked at the SPC severe weather maps recently, you might have noticed some big visual updates.
The SPC has officially rolled out its new Conditional Intensity Groups (CIGs)—often referred to as "Intensity Levels"—to Day 1, 2, and 3 convective outlooks.
Here is a quick look behind the scenes at what this change means and what James, Greg, and Evan discussed to keep you ahead of the storm:
📊 What are Conditional Intensity Groups (CIGs)?
In the past, the SPC used a binary "hatched" area on their maps to indicate a 10% or higher chance of "significant severe" weather (like an EF2+ tornado, 2"+ hail, or 75+ mph winds). However, this didn't give forecasters a way to separate a common severe day from a truly catastrophic, historic outbreak without forcing you to dig d...

- NASCAR fans experienced one of the weather community's most annoying issues: Charlotte's weather radar problem.
Without a National Weather Service radar in Charlotte, communities, such as Concord and the Charlotte Motor Speedway, have subpar weather radar coverage.
Like not having enough bars on your cell phone, the distant weather radars can leave you with a spotty impression of what's really going on.
And while a FAA-owned terminal doppler radar for Charlotte Douglas International Airport can help, it's doesn't feature all the same features as a NWS 88-D radar.
And with the Charlotte terminal doppler radar offline during a rainy NASCAR race weekend, race fans in Concord were left perplexed when the radar screens didn't always match reality of what was happening at the track. Thats because rain was literally happening "under the radar" beam at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
With distance, comes height. And with no local radar...
