- The U.S. government has announced a broad restructuring of tariffs on African imports, standardizing duties at 15% for 18 countries. Among the key beneficiaries is Botswana, with tariffs reduced from 38% to 15%. In contrast, South Africa retains a higher rate of 30%, underscoring the selective nature of the policy. The question that arises now is: How can Botswana translate this tariff reduction into meaningful economic growth beyond export by building sustainable industries, attracting strategic investment, and strengthening its role in regional trade networks?

- Description
- Botswana continues to face a severe gender-based violence (GBV) crisis, consistently ranking among the worst countries globally for reported GBV in non-conflict settings. Over 67% of women in Botswana have experienced abuse, more than double the global average, and over 44% of men admit to being perpetrators of violence.
The 2024 festive season highlighted the urgent nature of this problem, with the Botswana Police Service reporting 298 offenses against persons between December 19, 2024 and January 2, 2025, of which 181 (60.7%) were related to GBV.
This included 93 rape cases, 10 murders, and numerous other violent incidents, with high-density areas such as Molepolole, Serowe, and Francistown recording 175 cases. This discussion brings together a GBV survivor and a counsellor to explore these alarming realities.

- Only six days remain before hundreds of young minds, industry leaders and policymakers converge at the 3rd National Youth Employment Forum, a platform that promises more than just talk. This year’s gathering comes at a pivotal moment: Botswana’s Parliament has just passed the Employment and Labour Relations Bill, stirring both hope and critical questions. As the job market evolves and digital disruption meets a generation hungry for opportunity, the big question is: Will this forum deliver real change, or just more promises? We discuss what this year’s forum aims to achieve, how it plans to turn youth potential into productivity and the role industries are expected to play.

Sabine Matsheka of Maru Clothing was crowned the top fashion designer at the recent Creation Botswana Fashion competition, where 28 local designers showcased their best creations.
