The so-called ‘B-Man’, 37-year-old Brendan O’Callaghan, admitted 16 charges at the last minute after denying the charges for 5 years.
O’Callaghan was caught after French intelligence hacked the secret Encrochat phone network used by criminals.
Sources said that because of his links to prominent republicans, including former senior IRA members, a blind eye was turned to his activities.

- A 5G mast has been destroyed in an overnight arson attack on the outskirts of Belfast.
Firefighters attended reports of a mast alight on the Doagh Road in Whiteabbey at around midnight.
Two fire appliances and an officer's car attended the incident.
Firefighters managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to the entire mast. Using a hose reel, they brought the fire under control by 12:30am.
The Belfast Telegraph understands the mast was installed only a few days ago.
Police also attended the scene.
The overnight incident brings the total number of masts destroyed since January 2023 to 17.

A man (28) has been arrested on suspicion of her murder, police said on June 29th.
A senior detective said it was “a deeply tragic case”.
The probe centres on a block of flats at Elmfield Walk in Donaghadee.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Phillips said: “Police received a report at approximately 2.15pm on Saturday afternoon, June 28, of an unconscious woman with a serious injury inside a house in the Elmfield Walk area of the town.

Firefighters responded to reports of an electrical box belonging to the mast on fire close to the Stewartstown Road shortly before 11pm on Saturday.
The latest attack brings the number of masts destroyed in Belfast since 2021 to 16.
A spokesperson for NIFRS said: ”Two appliances attended the incident, one appliance from Springfield fire station and one appliance from Lisburn Road.
“The fire was extinguished at 11:13pm.”
Just two hours later, at 1:25am, firefighters received a second call, this time from police who discovered that the same mast had been set alight during routine patrols.
The fire service confirmed they attended the same location, this time for a mast that was well alight.
