- The Northern Ireland Executive has been urged to overhaul how suicide prevention is funded, with an Assembly inquiry calling for a new ring-fenced fund requiring government departments to contribute.
The All-Party Group (APG) on Suicide Prevention said responsibility for funding suicide prevention should not sit predominantly with the Department of Health when factors including poverty, housing, education, employment, trauma and social isolation can all influence suicide risk.
Its new inquiry report, launched on Tuesday, recommends the establishment of a ring-fenced Cross-Departmental Suicide Prevention Fund, administered by the Department of Health but jointly financed through agreed contributions from relevant Executive departments.
The call comes after 290 suicide deaths were registered in Northern Ireland in 2024.

Gary Anderson is a dangerous murderer –and he’s on the run. The Derry man had been granted compassionate leave for his father's funeral, even though his brother Sean, guilty of the same murder, wasn’t.
The 29-year-old was sentenced to a minimum tariff of 15 years for his role in the murder of father-of-five Karol Kelly in 2018.
The manhunt continues on both sides of the border as we wonder why Anderson was granted the leave in the first place.

- Sir Bob Geldof has defended Ed Sheeran over his decision not to take a political stance on stage, insisting artists should be free to decide whether to use their fame to speak out.
The veteran musician and activist said there should be “no shame” attached to Sheeran for choosing his own approach, as he launched a blistering attack on concert promoters and stadium owners over attempts to interfere with what performers say.
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, Geldof also strongly criticised the Israeli government over Gaza and praised artists including Macklemore who have publicly taken a stand.
“An artist has an absolute right to choose what he wants to say, when he wants to say it,” he said.
“There are those who say that, at a certain level of fame, having a non-political stance is political. No, that’s not right.
“Fame is a currency, and it depends on how you want to use it.”
