- Description
- Deaths are projected to outnumber births in the UK every year from 2026, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics.
The projections also suggest the UK population will grow more slowly than previously expected, reaching around 71 million by 2034. This slowdown is largely linked to a sharp decline in net migration.
At the same time, falling fertility rates mean the number of children is expected to decrease over the next decade, while the number of pensioners continues to rise more quickly than the working-age population.
On Politics Live, Vicki Young is joined by Paula Sheppard, an evolutionary anthropologist and human behavioural scientist at the University of Oxford, to discuss what these demographic shifts could mean for the UK’s future.
Also joining the discussion, are Labour MP Barry Gardiner, Conservative peer Lord Vaizey and Talk TV presenter Samara Gill.

- Description
- First Minister John Swinney has told BBC News he is "confident" that the SNP will win a majority at next month's Scottish Parliament election.
In an interview for Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg broadcast on the 19th April, Swinney made his boldest prediction yet - claiming the SNP will win the 65 seats it needs for a majority. Such a result, he insists, would provide a mandate for a second independence referendum.
Scotland's other largest parties have urged voters to back them to prevent an SNP majority, or accused the first minister of bluffing.
Scottish Liberal Democrats leader Alex Cole-Hamilton dismissed Swinney's claim, and predicted his party would make gains next month.
He said voters were "rightly sceptical of SNP promises of endless freebies", adding that the Lib Dems had published "a costed manifesto with a focus on access to health and tackling the cost of living crisis".
