- Date posted

- Description
- Gully erosion is an extreme form of soil erosion caused by water, which experts have told the BBC is advancing at a worrying speed. It can cause giant ravines to open up – with sometimes devastating consequences. Cities from Latin America to Africa have been torn apart and their communities destroyed. In 2022, 60 people in Kinshasa were killed during heavy rain as their homes fell into the gully.
Scientists say although erosion is a natural process which occurs over time, we’re seeing more of these giant canyons – and this acceleration is down to human-made activities: deforestation, poor infrastructures in cities and extreme weather patterns due to climate change.

Through WhatsApp voice notes, videos, and texts, this documentary reveals their abusive ordeals, and exposes the tactics of agents that traffic and then abandon them. The investigation also examines the poverty and desperation that leads young people to seek opportunities in the Middle East, and the weak justice system that often allows their employers to abuse them with impunity.
Intimate testimonies reveal widespread accounts of sexual and physical abuse, or worse, of African workers - and the film follows the work of an extraordinary network of women working across three continents fighting to bring them home, often against impossible odds.

- What inspired Skepta's film about a Nigerian hitman? BBC Africa
- Date posted
- Description
- Rapper Skepta says he has decided to create a film about a black undercover secret service agent after he "got bored of talks on who was going to play the black James Bond".
Speaking about his debut film, Tribal Mark, Skepta tells the BBC he is set on making an anti-hero character for black actors.
Known as one of the pioneers of British grime music, it is the first time the 41-year-old artist, real name Joseph Olaitan Adenuga Jr, has ventured into film directing, producing and acting.
His new short film follows the journey of a Nigerian immigrant, Mark, who moves to London as a child and adapts to a new culture and way of life. As a teenager he struggles to to fit in and ends up in prison for possession of a firearm.
Fast forward to the present day, and a sharply suited Mark, played by Skepta, is eating Nigerian dinner staples of pounded yam and Egusi soup.

- Somaliland: 'the non-country' at the centre of a row - BBC Africa
- Date posted
- Description
- It has a president, holds regular elections, has an Army and even its own currency. On paper, Somaliland looks just like any ordinary country, but it’s not recognised as such by any other nation.
Somalia considers it an integral part of its territory and so does the African Union, although Somaliland declared its independence in 1991. All that could now change, as Ethiopia, its powerful – and landlocked – neighbour has struck a deal with Somaliland which would grant it access to a port in the Red Sea. One of the terms of this agreement could also see Somaliland recognised by the Ethiopians as a sovereign state.
The deal has caused a huge stir in Somalia, and even led to protests in the country, as well as a growing war of words between the two nations.

- Day 2: ICJ genocide hearing against Israel | BBC Africa
- Date posted
- Description
- Israel has called on judges at the International Court of Justice to throw out the case brought by South Africa alleging that it is committing genocide in Gaza. On the second and final day of hearings at the UN's highest Court, lawyers acting for Israel argued that demands made by South Africa on Thursday for a stop to the offensive in Gaza lacked any merit and were based on a profoundly distorted factual and legal picture. The ICJ will deliver only an opinion on the genocide allegation as the case is not a criminal trial, although it is being closely watched.
