- On the first full day of his premiership Prime Minister Andy Burnham has laid out plans for scrapping VAT on household electricity bills and has claimed he wants a ‘cost of living government’.
Burnham said he would scrap VAT on household electricity bills in October, saving a typical household about £45 a year. This will be paid for by scrapping Keir Starmer's digital ID scheme, No 10 says, but ex-minister Darren Jones argues the ID scheme was "unfunded". Adam, Alex and Faisal discuss.

- A Russian warship carried out live-fire drills off the UK coast this week, in the latest instance of Moscow running military excercises near Nato territory. Last week, Poland scrambled fighter jets after Russian aircraft was spotted over the Baltic Sea. And the British government has said Russian submarines were seen near undersea cables and pipelines north of the UK earlier this year.
We ask Vitaly Shevchenko, chief analyst for BBC Monitoring, why the Kremlin is flexing its muscles so close to Nato countries, and how Europe views the threat of Russian aggression, more than four years after Vladimir Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

- US military launches strikes against Iran to "further degrade" capabilities | BBC News
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- The US military says it launched another round of strikes against Iran to "further degrade" its capabilities to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strikes - the 10th consecutive night of attacks - come after US President Donald Trump vowed to punish Iran for the deaths of US soldiers.
In response, Iran said it struck two oil tankers in the waterway, as well as US military assets in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, state news agency IRNA reported.
President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was now fighting a "full-scale war" with the US. Trump earlier said Iran had been hit "very hard" the previous night "in honour" of three US soldiers killed recently - two in Jordan and one in Iraq.
US Central Command (Centcom) said its latest strikes had hit Iranian "military command centres, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and air defence systems".

Tens of thousands of young men and women had turned up for Monday's protest and tried to march on parliament, defying a police ban.
Central Delhi witnessed overwhelming violence, with at least 60 protesters wounded when police used batons and tear gas on them. Policemen also tore down the stage and makeshift tents at the main protest venue.
Police said 118 of their personnel were also injured and 70 protesters have been detained.

- Description
- US President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on a wide range of goods imported from Canada, in retaliation for what he called "unequal treatment" of US cars, dairy and alcohol.
Everyday consumer items like wine and hockey sticks and industrial goods such as cement are among the goods targeted. However, several key exports will be spared, such as energy, critical minerals and fish.
Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by saying Canada stood ready to "intensify" trade talks with US in the coming weeks.
The White House said the duties would take effect in 30 days and mark a major escalation in trade tensions between the North American neighbours.

- Description
- Thousands of young Indians have marched through the streets of Delhi, in a protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party - a new, fast-growing political movement. CJP has been holding demonstrations calling for education reforms, after a scandal involving the leak of medical school entrance exams.
The cockroach party was started this year as a piece of online satire, by recent graduate Abhijeet Dipke. It was a response to comments by Indian Chief Justice Surya Kant, who allegedly compared unemployed youth to cockroaches and parasites. He later said he was referring only to people with "fake and bogus degrees". But Mr Dipke's CJP has now gained millions of followers - many of them young people frustrated by a lack of economic opportunity.
We ask the BBC's Anbarasan Ethirajan how great a challenge the Cockroach Janta Party could pose to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling BJP. Plus, we'll find out how the 'cockroach' movement fits into the broader trend o...

- Marco Rubio’s State Department has unveiled plans to dismantle the International Criminal Court, a tribunal that prosecutes individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
In a video, Rubio calls the ICC, "a global tribunal staffed by unelected globalist bureaucrats who claim their power is almost unlimited.”
The United States is not, nor has it ever been, a party to the ICC, which was established during the presidency of Bill Clinton. But could the ICC investigate and indict Americans anyway?
Today, The Global Story hears the view from within the world of international criminal law, with human rights lawyer, writer, and international law professor Philippe Sands.
