- OpenAI has announced it will not release its latest AI model due to safety concerns.
Its GPT-6.1 Astra system, which performs tasks like browsing the web and using apps by itself, "didn't quite meet the bar" of the company's standards, according to Saachi Jain, head of safety systems at OpenAI.
It comes as breaches by major AI firms' models intensify the debate about risks posed by the tech - with Anthropic underlining its concerns AI might threaten humanity as it prepares to go public.

The treatments involve substances such as psilocybin and ayahuasca, both of which are illegal under UK law.
At the same time, researchers are conducting clinical trials to investigate whether something similar could have a place here.
While campaigners argue the treatments could transform care, further evidence is needed and significant regulatory hurdles remain.

- New York state prosecutors say they will reopen a criminal inquiry into the alleged rape of a woman at Cornell University in 2024.
The woman filed a civil lawsuit on 16 September alleging she was drugged and raped by multiple people at a fraternity house at the university.
"Once we determine the appropriate charges, the case will be prosecuted in the most objective and impartial means possible" through a grand jury, Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said Monday.
Cornell University said that while it supported the case being brought before a grand jury, "any suggestion that the university did not impose consequential punishments for those involved is false".

- China's President Xi Jinping returns to the White House on Thursday for the first time in over a decade.
A priority for both leaders will be to discuss AI. The two countries are currently locked in a fierce competition for AI dominance, amid dire warnings from US tech executives in recent weeks that the speed of AI development needs to be slowed, as the risks to humanity are too great.
President Trump has rejected those calls for a slowdown or suggestions of regulation, in part because of his concerns that China will overtake the US in AI development.
In this episode we speak to the BBC’s China correspondent Laura Bicker who tells us what China’s AI revolution looks from inside the country. And we ask how this issue is changing the power dynamics between the US and China.

- Climate scientists have put out a dire warning about this year’s El Niño; that it will likely be the worst in recorded history.
And if previous ‘super’ El Niños are anything to go by, that means that this cycle will bring extreme weather - flooding, drought, wildfires, and hunger- across the world.
But how do scientists know what the effects of an El Niño will be? And how do they communicate that information to governments and the public in a way that causes calm preparedness instead of panic?
Tom Di Liberto is a former climate scientist for the US government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and a science communicator, who specialises in monitoring El Niño phenomena. He joins Tristan Redman and Asma Khalid on today’s The Global Story.

- South Africa's new ambassador to Washington, Roelf Meyer, has a personal reason to challenge US President Donald Trump's assertion that there is a genocide against white Afrikaners - he is "a born Afrikaner" himself.
The notion of a mass attack on the white Afrikaner minority in South Africa does not exist, he told the BBC, adding that his identity gave him the legitimacy to say so.
Meyer was one of the chief mediators to end white-minority rule known as apartheid in South Africa in the 1990s, and he was appointed ambassador to the US in April, after diplomatic relations between the US and South Africa plummeted.
In an interview with the BBC, Meyer said the facts about violence in South Africa had been misrepresented and he never got a clear answer about where this "misdirection of information" was coming from.
Last year, Trump accused South Africa of white genocide in a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House an...

- Manchester City may be expelled from the Premier League after being found guilty of the vast majority of of 115 breaches of the financial rules it had been accused of.
Sanctions on the club, which are yet to be announced, may include exclusion from the UK’s top football league, a points deduction or a huge fine.
The news of the guilty verdict was broken by the Athletic, which reported that 114 of the 115 charges have been upheld. The BBC has been told that the club is planning to appeal.
The news came 1,327 days after City were charged by the Premier League in February 2023 following a four-year investigation, and 22 months since a hearing by an independent commission concluded.
The seismic decisions leaves a huge number of questions about what will happen next, what City's punishment might be and how the current season will be affected.
One possibility is that rival Premier League sides may take legal action for co...
