- On average, a commercial aircraft gets struck by lightning once per year - but don't let that shock you.
Lightning cuts through the sky 8 million times a day and this lab shows us what happens when it strikes. Using 100 to 1 scale replicas of carbon fiber composite airplanes, the effectiveness of their designs are put to the test.
The lightning attaches to an extremity, like the nose, and travels through the skin before exiting through another extremity. A thin metal mesh woven into the skin acts as a lightning rod, protecting all on board from the dangerous electrical current.

It was flexible enough to deliver both low-altitude flight and supersonic speed. But it was its distinctive shape that stood out–flight crews dubbed it the 'Aardvark.'

- Caught in a severe thunderstorm from Belize to New Orleans, TACA Flight 110 was in trouble. Just 20 miles from the airport the engines quit, turning the Boeing 737 into a multi-ton glider.
With no thrust and dropping 1,500 feet a minute, the crew needed a place to land - and fast. As Captain Dardano prepared to land in the canal, a new option appeared in the form of a narrow levee.
It was one of the most remarkable landings in the history of commercial aviation.
