- U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R‑Ala.) voiced support for an ICE officer who fatally shot a woman on Jan. 7 after she allegedly tried to ram agents with her vehicle, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
In a statement, DHS said “ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations... and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle.” They called it “an act of domestic terrorism.”
The shooting has sparked heated debate amongst lawmakers, with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey going so far as to call DHS’ statement on the shooting “bull----.”
According to DHS policy, officers “may use deadly force only when the [officer] has a reasonable belief that the subject of such force poses an imminent threat...”
Frey said the department was trying to “spin this as an action of self-defense.” Frey identified the victim as a 36-year-old woman. Authorities have not publicly identified her.

- Alabama lawmaker Jeana Ross (R-Guntersville) has pre-filed HB78, a bill for the 2026 legislative session that would limit screen time for children.
HB78 would require licensed child-care facilities, public kindergarten classrooms and certain Pre-K classrooms to enforce screen time for kids.
The guidelines and training were created by the Department of Early Childhood Education (ADECE) Research and Evaluation team.
Under the current Alabama Administrative Code, children under the age of two are prohibited from screen usage in licensed childcare facilities.
Children over the age of two are limited to less than 30 minutes per day for children in half-day programs and less than an hour a day in full-day programs in licensed childcare facilities.
Ross’ bill expands these limitations to include weekly limitations of 90 minutes per day for children ages two through four, prohibiting individual screen usage.

About 100 groups across the United States have announced protests against the move, with at least three of those spanning the state in Huntsville, Birmingham and Dothan.
Protesters say the U.S. invasion was an attempt to steal oil and dominate the region, rather than stop drug trafficking or restore democracy.

A group of progressive Huntsville-based groups organized the North Alabama protest in Big Spring Park.
Dozens of protestors also gathered in Five Points South in Birmingham, reciting multiple chants against the current administration.

About 130,000 people in Alabama are expected to lose their coverage if the credits aren’t renewed. A House vote expected in January could offer another chance, but there are no guarantees.
Premiums for individuals enrolled in the ACA marketplace could rise by an average of 93% in the state.
In a report released in October, the Commonwealth Fund estimated that Alabama could lose 9,100 jobs, mostly in the health care sector, if the subsidies expire. That’s the seventh highest amount of any state in the country.
In December, the Senate rejected two partisan health care bills — a Democratic pitch to extend the subsidies for three more years and a Republican alternative that would instead provide Americans with health savings accounts.

A volunteer doing a grid search discovered John John’s body near a creek in a wooded area about two miles from his father’s home in the Thach community.
Sheriff Nick Smith said there were no immediate signs of foul play, and that it appears the boy wandered off while playing with his 6-year-old brother, Isaac.
The family’s dog Buck, who also went missing, was found alive near John John’s body, the sheriff said.
John John’s father, 40-year-old Jameson Kyle Boley, was arrested on charges unrelated to the child’s disappearance.
Explosives were found in and around Boley’s home, and charges filed later stated the children “had the opportunity” to be exposed to methamphetamine.

Philip Rivers, 44, is an eight-time Pro Bowler, ranked sixth in touchdown passes, seventh in passing yards in NFL history and currently coaches high school football.
The former Athens High School star entered the NFL from North Carolina State as the fourth player picked in the 2004 draft. He's played for the Chargers, and one previous season with the Colts before retiring.
Since then, Rivers has been the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope. In five years, he's won 42 games and lost 16 leading the Cardinals to the playoffs three straight years with semifinal appearances the last two.
This season, St. Michael was ranked No. 1 in Class 4A for the first time. St. Michael Catholic star receiver Brody Jones has one initial thought about his high school coach returning to the NFL.
