- Mississippi has the lowest income range for the middle class, $39,000 to $118,000.
- Alabama is ranked as the state with the seventh lowest middle class range, starting at $44,439 to $133,318.
- Other states with lower middle-income rates include West Virginia ($40,532 to $121,596); Louisiana ($40,532 to $121,972); Arkansas ($41,404 to $124,212); and Kentucky ($43,017 to $129,052).

Located in Scottsboro, Alabama, Unclaimed Baggage has been reclaiming and selling items from unclaimed bags on airplanes for 56 years. The auction started just last year after there was enough interest in how the process of going through mystery suitcases worked, Community Coordinator for Unclaimed Baggage Emma Bradford said.
“The airlines do a phenomenal job of getting their bags back to the rightful owner; they’re over 99.5 percent successful,” Bradford said. “But when there’s millions of people traveling every single day, those bags add up.”
At Saturday’s auction, four mystery bags were up for grabs every hour between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The four winners every hour then opened the bags in front of everyone watching, with nobody having a clue what would be inside.

- History and the future were celebrated Friday during ceremonies to officially re-launch the campus as the United States Coast Guard Training Center Birmingham-Southern.
The Coast Guard announced in March that it had selected the Birmingham-Southern campus as its latest training facility. Officials said a training facility was needed to help achieve its goal of growing the force by 15,000 members.
“This is a transformative moment for this city and the United States Coast Guard,” said Sen. Katie Britt, who chairs the Homeland Security appropriations subcommittee. “This is a rare and perfect fit.”
Military ceremony was on display with a band and honor guard, along with a helicopter flyover outside.
Officials touted the combined name of the new facility and promised that the Birmingham Southern logo would remain at the site.

- Austal USA celebrated the opening of a massive new submarine manufacturing facility Thursday, June 4, 2026 in Mobile.
Vice Adm. Robert Gaucher said that by this time next year, with MMF3 fully operational, he expects Austal USA to have “over 1,200 employees working across three shifts,” exclusively on submarine work. And he had a specific challenge for Austal USA leadership.
“I know you’ve committed to me at least 660,000 hours of production by the end of this year,” he said. “But what I really want is you to exceed that. Hit the target of 880,000 [hours] in 2026 and more than double that in 2027. I’ll be tracking it personally each week.”
Austal USA President Gene Miller said the shipyard has delivered three submarine modules and has eight more in the works. MMF3 represents an investment of “about a half a billion dollars,” he said, and will dramatically accelerate production.

- After searching for the right site across Alabama for nearly a year, a Houston-based real estate developer settled on a rural area in Lowndes County for its future $1.5 billion artificial intelligence data center.
It’s called Project Red Clay, a proposal from Cloverleaf Infrastructure that would span 800 acres in Hayneville.

And the rest of the nation, well, they just sort of let it happen, Stevenson told me in a recent interview. Sure, there was a 14th Amendment that guaranteed equal protection, and a 15th Amendment that was supposed to do the same for the right to vote, but it didn’t always work out that way.
