- Description
- Benno Cleveland, a Vietnam War veteran from Alaska, takes more than a dozen medications daily. He says it’s because he was exposed to Agent Orange, like hundreds of thousands of other servicemembers, during the war.
At the time, the American military claimed the herbicide it used to remove dense foliage posed no threat to humans.
But it was toxic. It’s now associated with a host of long-term illnesses including cancer, nerve damage and diabetes.
Cleveland shared his story with Shelby Herbert, an Alaska Desk reporter at KUAC in Fairbanks. He wants Americans to honor the servicemembers who gave their lives for their country in wartime – and in the decades after.
