- This summer marks 90 years of the Alaska State Fair in Palmer. But Alaska is so big, it actually has four different state fairs that run every summer.
This year, our reporters took a look at the big events -- and of course, food -- offered at each fair. From the Kenai Peninsula State Fair in Ninilchik, up to the Tanana Valley State Fair near Fairbanks and down to the Southeast Alaska State Fair in Haines, Alaskans had no shortage of ways to celebrate their state.

- Benno Cleveland, a Vietnam War veteran from Alaska, takes more than a dozen medications daily. He says it’s because he was exposed to Agent Orange, like hundreds of thousands of other servicemembers, during the war.
At the time, the American military claimed the herbicide it used to remove dense foliage posed no threat to humans.
But it was toxic. It’s now associated with a host of long-term illnesses including cancer, nerve damage and diabetes.
Cleveland shared his story with Shelby Herbert, an Alaska Desk reporter at KUAC in Fairbanks. He wants Americans to honor the servicemembers who gave their lives for their country in wartime – and in the decades after.

- Want to know how the candidates for Anchorage Assembly grade Mayor Suzanne LaFrance’s performance? Or what books Anchorage’s school board candidates have been reading? We have a tool for that.
Alaska Public Media partnered with the Anchorage Daily News to interview the candidates. We asked them a set of questions that you helped to develop, then packaged up their answers and basic bios in a guide on our website.
The guide makes it easy to read up on the candidates individually, or compare multiple candidates’ answers to a specific question on issues like strategies on homelessness, school funding, and the declining population.
