- Weeks after deadly flash floods buried entire villages across China and Nepal in late August conspiracy theories about the disaster’s cause continued to spread online.
Social media users around the world shared posts and viral animations that falsely blamed the disaster on a dam collapse, while others accused Chinese hydropower projects.
The floods have cast a critical spotlight on the environmental and social impacts of large-scale development projects in the Himalayan region, but in this video, experts told AFP that it is impossible for a dam to have triggered the disaster.
Scientists explained that no satellite images depict a reservoir dam in the area. They helped us piece together the sequence of cascading events, which began with an ice-rock avalanche, as also revealed by satellite images.
