Ukraine has targeted Saint Petersburg as it steps up long-range drone strikes on Russian energy, military and logistics sites in recent weeks, calling the attacks justified retribution for Moscow's nightly drone and missile barrage of its cities.

The third strike on a Wildberries warehouse in six days, Kyiv has accused the company -- Russia's largest online retailer often known as the Russian equivalent of Amazon -- of storing drone parts and helping the Russian army. In Saint Petersburg, an AFP reporter saw grey smoke rising into the morning sky over high-rise residential buildings in the city, President Vladimir Putin's hometown that is more than 800 kilometres (500 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

- New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said his office does not have the authority to carry out the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and called on US federal officials to step in.
The Hague-based International Criminal Court said in 2024 that it had reasonable grounds to believe Netanyahu was responsible for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Israel's offensive in Gaza following the brutal 7 October 2023 cross-border attack by Hamas.
In an interview with the New York Times, Mamdani had said he was in talks over whether to try to arrest Netanyahu during an upcoming UN summit.
