The Acting Race Relations Commissioner is "seeking an explanation" over claims the Government is working to reduce references to the experiences of Māori.
It follows the formal withdrawal yesterday of the National Iwi Chairs Forum from the working group for the National Action Plan Against Racism (NAPAR), citing a reduced focus on institutional and colonial racism against Māori. The plan is under development by the Ministry of Justice.
The Human Rights Commission's tino rangatiratanga shared leader Julia Whaipooti said Māori were among the most likely to experience racism in Aotearoa New Zealand.

- The strongest earthquake in a quarter-century rocked Taiwan during the morning rush hour yesterday, killing nine people, stranding dozens of workers at quarries and sending some residents scrambling out the windows of damaged buildings.
Taiwan's earthquake monitoring agency said the quake was 7.2 magnitude while the US Geological Survey put it at 7.4.
It struck about 18km off of Hualien, on Taiwan's east coast, and was about 35km deep.
Erin Hale, (00:31) a journalist based in Taiwan’s capital of Taipei, spoke to Breakfast saying she had experienced "dozens and dozens of aftershocks".
Christchurch-based New Zealand woman Delphine Herbert (05:06) was on the 16th floor of her hotel when the quake hit. As a wave of aftershocks hit, she described the experience live to Breakfast.

- The gender pay gap has driven a 36% difference between the average amounts men and women have been putting into their KiwiSaver every year, new research suggests.
The analysis was carried out by AUT's New Zealand Policy Research Institute, which looked at new data only available to researchers from April 2019.
The average employee contribution amount from men has been approximately 33% higher than those of women, $2886 compared to $2160, according to the research.
Meanwhile, the average employer contributions for men were approximately 39% higher than those for women, $2328 compared to $1673.
Retirement Commissioner Jane Wrightson said the data also showed a need for employers to contribute at higher rates than the current KiwiSaver minimum of 3%.
"At the moment we’re not seeing employers show the initiative we’d hope to see, one in three employees already contribute at a rate higher than the 3% minimum," she said.<...

In the past year, the mayor has been pushing for legislative changes which would allow his council to introduce congestion charging on key motorways and arterials.
The new tax, dubbed "time of use charges", was intended to encourage some motorists to change the time, route or method of their travel. Others might choose not to travel at all.
Transport Minister Simeon Brown has been supportive of the measure and has previously said he wanted to "rapidly legislate" to bring in new charges on drivers.
Speaking to Breakfast, Wayne Brown said it would take only a small number of motorists to change their behaviour in order to unjam Auckland's roads.

Currently councils can apply for an exemption but some want for retailers to have that choice.

- Police are treating the vandalism of a rainbow pedestrian crossing on Auckland's Karangahape Rd as a "hate crime" and have carried out a search of a property in the city's south. White paint was spread across the design, which depicts the LGBTTQIA+ flag.
The prominent rainbow pride symbol was the second such crossing to be vandalised in New Zealand this week, after Gisborne's Gladstone Rd pride crossing was also painted white in a staged protest.
