Southland, Tasman and Marlborough all have heavy rain warnings, residents in Spring Creek near Blenheim were told to evacuate by 9 am this morning, as the Wairau catchment is expected to rise. One of those residents is Vanessa Beck, who told Breakfast "It's been raining the whole time." Beck was feeling confident "they've given a good window" to evacuate.

- OJ Simpson earned fame, fortune and adulation through football and show business, but his legacy was forever changed by the June 1994 killing of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles.
His trail lasted six months and involved dozens of witnesses that testified including New Zealander Bruce Weir who spoke to Breakfast. He is a statistician whose work in DNA analysis was considered pioneering at the time.
Simpson's family announced on Simpson's official X account that he died on Wednesday (local time) of prostate cancer. Simpson's attorney confirmed to TMZ on Thursday that he died in Las Vegas.

While the legislation will go to Parliament next month, the new rules are not expected to come into effect until early 2025, according to the Government.
Bishop said today: "The previous government waged a war on landlords. Many landlords told us this caused them to exit the rental market altogether."
He said the Government was making "sensible, pro-tenant" changes to help increase the supply of rental properties.

- Heavy rain on the West Coast has continued overnight, with an update expected this morning on when State Highway 6 will reopen.
A MetService meteorologist told 1News there's been 200-350mm of rainfall on the West Coast in the last 24 hours.
They said the highest rainfall was seen in the ranges. The Marlborough Sounds experienced 225mm and parts of Westland saw 250mm.
Western parts of South Island still have heavy rain warnings in place until this evening with more rain expected to fall today.
MetService said the front will eventually move to the top of the South Island before hitting the North Island tomorrow and into the weekend.

It comes as a major weather system brings days of heavy rain and strong winds to the area. State Highway 6 is now closed between Haast and Franz Josef due to slips.

- A total solar eclipse has begun across North America, expected to last up to nearly five minutes in certain spots. Breakfast was joined by Gary Siddal the president of Buffalo Museum to discuss how people in America can catch a glimpse.
In Canada, Constable Philip Gavin from Niagara Regional Police Services spoke to Breakfast from the region deemed one of the best locations to view the eclipse from. The region had declared a state of emergency due to concerns one million people were going to travel to the location.
Later 1News US correspondent Logan Church joined from New York to explain how it felt to be part of the rare total solar eclipse that was witnessed by millions from Mexico to Canada saying it felt "eerie" in the afternoon to have the sun "suddenly and quite dramatically" drop and the temperature cool down. Church also discussed Winston Peters was spotted in New York where safety glasses to view the eclipse.

- Prime Minister Christopher Luxon joined Breakfast to discuss the Government's nine targets announced on Monday to be achieved over six years. Luxon defended these targets saying they are achievable, measurable targets the public can hold the Government to account for.
The targets discussed were slashing wait times in emergency departments and reducing victims of violent crime. Further discussion was on Fire and Emergency (FENZ) funding, Luxon agreed the Internal Affairs Minister, Brooke van Velden was "doing the right thing" by consulting with on the levy amount. Luxon later spoke about the Christchurch Cathedral restoration, he said it was "unlikely" the Government would make "a further contribution".

- The Government has announced nine targets - including reducing the number of people on the benefit by 50,000, and reducing victims of violent crime by 20,000 - to be achieved by 2030.
It also includes reducing those in emergency housing by 75% and increasing school attendance to 80% of students present for 90% of the term.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced the targets at his post-Cabinet press conference this afternoon.
He said the targets were built around the National Party's election promises to New Zealanders - rebuilding the economy, restoring law and order and delivering better public services.

- Billy Guyton grew up wanting to be an All Black. Instead, he will be remembered as NZ’s first professional rugby player diagnosed with CTE – a brain disease linked to repeated head knocks.
Concussions forced him into retirement from rugby at age 28, and he died five years later struggling with his mental health.
A video he made at the time shows how he sought out help and was ignored.
His whānau now ask where rugby was when he needed it most, and share Billy's message of why player welfare and education matters.
