For 11 years, Tony Brooks has walked the halls of the Statehouse, many days on his way to a tall wooden door on the fourth floor.
It’s easy to miss if you don’t know where to look, but Brooks knows right where it is.
He’s been on the other side of it, too many times to count, climbing steps, 238 of them, up a spiral staircase, an ascent the 59-year-old Indianapolis native has made countless times.
Even with the sound of his sneakers hitting each step, Brooks' journey is a silent one.
“At two years old, I got sick with mumps and became deaf,” Brooks explained through an interpreter, who uses American Sign Language to speak for him.

- Mike Pruitt resigned his elected office as Johnson County Coroner effective Aug. 5, one day before he was convicted of seven misdemeanors involving a 17-year-old girl. Pruitt was a family friend and 4H leader of the girl.
Pruitt pleaded guilty Aug. 6 to seven counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He admitted to providing alcohol to the girl on each occasion. But the victim's mother said what Pruitt did to her daughter was much worse.
The mother testified that Pruitt harassed and stalked her daughter over two years in “small, calculated steps”. The mother said Pruitt sent her daughter more than 100 text messages about alcohol, encouraged her to get a fake ID, gave her $50 a week through Venmo, and invited her to an autopsy at his office.
The girl’s mother sought and was granted a protective order against Pruitt in August 2025, which led to the criminal investigation.
