A five-month experiment — during which pianos will be available on downtown sidewalks for the public to play — is officially under way, as a large crowd turned out for the Sarasota Keys kickoff event Friday.
Six pianos, all decorated by local artists and sponsored by local businesses and individuals, were on display in Five Points Park as part of the event, put on by the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County.
An ensemble of local pianists played two songs before the pianos were moved to various locations throughout downtown, where they will remain available to the public during business hours through May.
Arts and Cultural Alliance Executive Director Jim Shirley thanked the artists, musicians, sponsors and attendees for making the event a success. He also thanked the City Commission, which approved a six-month trial period for the pianos in December.

The local arts initiative aimed at placing six pianos in downtown Sarasota for public use continues to move forward.

The group includes curator Tim Jaeger, Jack Dowd, Richard Capes, Gale Fulton Ross, Lori Loveberry George, Cassia Kite and Steven Strenk — Kite and Jaeger will partner on one piano, according to a news release.
The Sarasota City Commission supported the initiative, dubbed Sarasota Keys, with a 3-2 vote Monday, Dec. 2. Proponents hope the plan will promote the arts and provide a vibrant branding opportunity for downtown.

But, Kalajian thinks the most innovative co-located library she has visited was one that shared a building with a laundromat.
Kalajian will get to see the same type of library pioneering in Sarasota County Feb. 19, when the Gulf Gate Library collection debuts at Westfield Sarasota Square Mall.
The new location will open in the 20,000-square-foot space next to JCPenny, and across from an ice-skating rink, Feb. 19, according to a Sarasota County press release.

The closest thing to an office for Sarasota Audubon President Jeanne Dubi is a boardwalk that extends over the water in the Celery Fields off Palmer Boulevard. It's here that Dubi chats with tourists who are birding for the first time.
"We'll see you again sometime soon when we have our Nature Center," Dubi told the tourists Monday before they left the popular bird-watching location.
In the spring, a makeshift parking lot less than 100 yards away will become the site of a $1.3 million environmental education and visitor center. The Sarasota Audubon Society will operate the center and fund it using donations. The society will lease the land from the county for $10 per year; so far, it has raised 70% of the funds needed to build the center.
Currently, the county is building a restroom facility in the location. The Audubon Society plans to break ground on its nature center shortly af...

The action of downtown, that is. The couple's well-known comedy club, currently in a strip mall at 3333 N. Tamiami Trail, will bring the laughs to downtown Sarasota. According to Les McCurdy, the goal is to have McCurdy's Comedy Theatre open by late March or early April at 1923 Ringling Blvd.
Formerly Shaner's Pizzeria, the 7,100-square-foot space has a full kitchen, which allows McCurdy's the option of expanding its menu. There will be a new area called The Green Room, which will host open mic nights and other live performances. The lounge area includes a bar that patrons will pass through before heading into the showroom. The showroom will seat 200, with a triangle-shaped stage.

A construction worker at a waterfront site on the 300 block of Bird Key Drive spotted a gray object floating in the water at roughly 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6.
Less than two hours later, Mote Marine Laboratory staff removed the body of a juvenile male manatee from the Bird Key waterway.
"It's sad any time we find one that small," said Mote Marine Laboratory staff biologist Rebeccah Hazelkorn, who assisted four others in the Stranding Investigations Program remove the manatee. There weren't immediate signs of trauma, and the marine mammal may have died from exposure to red tide or an infection, Hazelkorn said.
Mote staff used a crane on the rear of a white truck to lift the manatee out of the waterway, and will now transfer it the Marine Mammal Pathobiology Laboratory for a necropsy to determine the cause of death. It ould take up to a month to learn the results Hazelkorn said.
