Author Wes Moore praised My Brother's Keeper, a White House initiative aimed at helping "young boys of color," avoid jail and embrace education, during an informal interview before the Ringling College Library Association Town Hall Lecture Series Thursday morning.
"This isn't just about how exactly how are we helping young boys of color, this is about the fact that when you look at every single ration that boys of color are falling behind — on educational attainment, on employment attainment and the success and stability of families," Moore said.
The veteran and Rhodes Scholar has personal and literary experience that show the power of positive intervention in the lives of troubled youth.
Moore's mother Joy enrolled a 12-year-old Wes Moore in military school after noticing some academic and behavioral issues.

A group of advocates has begun a campaign to put a new Sarasota city charter up for consideration during November's election, which, if approved, would establish an elected mayor as the executive of the municipal government.
It's Time Sarasota is a political committee chaired by Linda Holland, the president of the Gillespie Park Neighborhood Association. The group is advocating for a new city charter that would create an elected-mayor position, sometimes referred to as a "strong mayor," to oversee the city. Another significant change would establish a city council with five districts, rather than the three districts that currently send representatives to the City Commission.
The group has posted the full text of its proposed charter online at itstimesarasota.com. Now, it's preparing to gather roughly 3,500 signatures by June to place a charter referendum on the November ballot.

Ernie Ritz's home may come with a view, but he wants it changed.
Ritz, who lives in a building at the southwest corner of First Street and Lemon Avenue, looks at his neighbor, the Sarasota County Area Transit transfer station, as both a missed opportunity and a bad fit.
The chairman of the city's Downtown Improvement District says the city and county, both searching for ways to generate income without raising taxes, would benefit greatly from getting a new piece of downtown real estate on the tax rolls.
"You look around the city and you start seeing all of this non income-producing property owned by the county or the city," Ritz said. "My idea was to start selling off some of the property that they own that's not income-producing."
That includes the SCAT station, which he says is a prime piece of property zoned for a potential high-rise development. As it stands, he said, ...

Platon's portraits are simple.
But, using that simplicity the world-renowned photographer can capture complexity of a world leader's icy stare, like that of Russian President Vladimir Putin. A flick of a finger or movement of an eyebrow can reveal a person's true character, Platon explained before speaking as part of the Ringling Town Hall Lecture Series Tuesday.
"I'm not really a photographer at all," Platon said. "I'm a story teller."
As the son of a modernist architect, Platon said he was always drawn to minimalism — stripping away the environment helps him focus on his subject.
"Those posters on the wall to me (are) just visual anarchy," Platon said while pointing out some colorful artwork in the basement of the Van Wezel.
Something as simple as a handshake can be revealing, as well. Platon described former Pres. Bill Clinton's handshake as "seduction in...
