- John Elijah Matthews, a 25-year-old man from Decatur, has been charged with a federal crime after fatally stabbing a 66-year-old woman, Margaret Swan, on a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train in an unprovoked attack. Prosecutors allege that Matthews attacked Swan with a folding knife while she was seated by the train door and looking at her phone. Swan was stabbed approximately 20 times in the chest and neck as she attempted to defend herself. Matthews was arrested at the scene and was found with a bloody folding knife consistent with the weapon seen on surveillance video.
