- Date posted

- Description
- Ida Minerva Tarbell was born in a small rural town in Northwestern Pennsylvania named Hatch Hallow in 1857, two years before the first major oil boom in the United States near Titusville. Like many men, Ida’s father, Franklin, traveled to the town known as Pithole to pursue business opportunities.
By 1880, Ida graduated from Allegheny College, in Meadville, PA -- the only woman in her class. At age 34, she moved to Paris with the goal of furthering her writing career. That effort led to her most successful series for McClure’s Magazine, “The History of the Standard Oil Company”. Standard Oil was the company started by the world’s first billionaire, John D. Rockefeller. Ida’s work led to the U.S. Supreme Court breaking up the company’s monopoly over the early oil industry.
Tarbell’s work has shaped business practices in our country to this day, despite her name being largely forgotten to time… until now.
