- ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Roanoke City Police Department officials say they have been implementing a new approach to help solve homicides in the city. The big focus is reaching out to residents, nurturing state and federal partnerships, and hiring more investigators.
Roanoke City reached a record number of homicides in 2023. So far, 26 people have been killed this year- something the city hasn’t seen since the 1970′s.
Police say they are doing everything they can to find those responsible for the violence in the city.

And then of course I got sucked in immediately and started reading it and found out that wow, this was quite a phenomena that year in this part of the state and it was not just Roanoke but it involved other communities as well,” Harris said.
A Woman in Black, over the span of nine months of copy printed from Bristol, Roanoke, Bluefield, Tazewell and Lynchburg, mentioned the same paranormal phenomena.
“All of the reports were almost identical,” he said. “We had an apparition of a woman dressed totally in black, long black dress, black coat, black veil, covering the lower part of her face, and a black turban like headdress.”
The ghostly figure would follow men home late at night with articles reporting bullets flying through her unharmed and her ability to disappear suddenly.

- BLUE RIDGE, Va. (WDBJ) - Vasilia McCrady loves to be outside with her honeybees. As the owner of Heritage Apiary in Blue Ridge, she’s a passionate bee advocate. Two years ago, her daughter inspired her to take her mission a step further by starting an outreach program.
“My four-year-old asked for a bee suit, and that’s where it all started. [The program gets] bees together with younger generations to spark that fire of maybe wanting to be a beekeeper or learn more about how they don’t want to hurt you, and they’re just around doing their jobs,” she explained.
Vasilia uses an observation hive so they can safely see all that goes on inside a beehive. She says it’s been great helping kids get past their fears.

An athlete from Blacksburg is starting her career earlier than most. Olivia Hawes has finished dozens of 5K’s, 8K’s and even a 9K race, all before she turned three years old.
Like most toddlers, Olivia Hawes loves to play and run around. But few are able to channel that high energy into running and completing 5K races. Olivia’s mom, Angel Hawes, explained her daughter was walking at eight months and running before she turned one.
“Nothing about raising Olivia is like expected,” Hawes said. “She is out there smiling, excited to run, and you see pictures from race days and she is all smiles.”

WDBJ7 searched through the archives to find footage of the mall previously known as “the Cadillac of Southwest Virginia shopping centers”
The idea of different stores located in one building was sparked by Sears, previously located on Williamson Rd., in the late 1950s and early 60s. As the people of Roanoke wanted what would later be referred to as a shopping center, three new malls started construction.
Suddenly the Star City was bustling with shopping centers with Crossroads Mall and Towers Mall opening in 1961 and the Roanoke Salem Plaza debuting in 1962.

Edward Denoyer was taken into custody in South Dakota Wednesday. He had been on the run for over a month and was wanted in connection to a shooting that killed two people and left another injured.
Court documents identify the victims as Crystal Brown and Rodrel Mathis. Search warrants reveal investigators learned the shooting happened after someone arrived at the Melrose Avenue home to “conduct an illegal narcotics transaction.” Police allege an argument began and shots were fired.
Crystal Brown’s family was relieved to hear about the arrest, saying they are hoping it leads to a trial, so they can finally know what led to the shooting.

Tom McCracken, the pastor at South Baptist CommUNITY Church in Salem, filed the lawsuit. He’s suing Roanoke City council member Luke Priddy and a Roanoke County parent for defamation. WDBJ7 obtained a copy of the civil lawsuit after it was filed October 13.
This comes after the Roanoke County School board meetings where people clashed over LGBTQ+ related policies.

Don-Ho’s has had three machines for four or five years, but soon the skill games could be on their way out. Friday, the Virginia Supreme Court reinstated a ban on the devices.
The Office of Attorney General Jason Miyares is recommending that Commonwealth’s Attorneys delay enforcement until mid-November, but business owners could face legal action if they don’t comply with the order by then.

The Petal It Forward initiative was started in 2015 by the Society of American Florists.
CEO Kate Penn says the day was purposefully planned on a Wednesday to boost morale for the rest of the week.
“It came after looking at statistics that showed that while 80% of people reported that receiving flowers makes them happy, even more, 88% said that giving flowers makes them happy,” said Penn.
Over 500 florists across the county are participating - Including local floral shop George’s Flowers.

The structure was originally constructed as the Rockledge Inn in 1892 and closed shortly after in 1894, later falling to ruins due to the Great Depression.

Later in life, when she developed cancer, cells taken from her body without her knowledge or permission were found to be "immortal," meaning they could multiple outside of her body.
Those HeLa cells were duplicated over and over and used worldwide for lifesaving research and medicine.
On Henrietta Lacks Day in Virginia, Lacks' family joined community leaders to dedicate the statue. It was designed by artist Bryce Cobbs and sculpted by Larry Bechtel.

- In 1971, Andrew Lewis High School's football team was undefeated. They made it all of the way to the State Championship where they faced off against the T.C. Williams Titans, depicted in the motion picture film "Remember the Titans".
WDBJ7 recently sat down with a few of those Andrew Lewis players. They talked about their undefeated season, the integration of Andrew Lewis, Victory Stadium, and their memories from that championship game where they lost 27-0.
